WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden stated on Wednesday, May 8, that since inflation "was 9% when I came to office", voters were wrong to hold him responsible for the high inflation, the New York Post reported.

Biden told CNN’s Erin Burnett in a rare interview, "No president has had the run we’ve had in terms of creating jobs and bringing down inflation, It was 9 percent when I came to office — 9 percent."

Biden defended his economic policies after Burnett told him, "Voters by a wide margin trust [former President Donald] Trump more on the economy."

Before facing Trump again in November, Biden argued that he had already "turned around" the economy, even in the face of chronically high interest rates and inflation.

Notably, shortly after Biden took office, inflation began to rise. It then accelerated to levels not seen since the early 1980s, peaking in June 2022, or 17 months later.

As of March, the annual rate of inflation has been persistently high at 3.5 percent.

Prominent Democratic economists are among Biden's detractors who claim that the large expenditure enacted in his first year of office essentially increased money printing, which contributed to the sharp decline in the purchasing value of the dollar.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, average prices for goods and services have climbed by 19% since Biden assumed office. In contrast, during Trump's four years in administration, prices rose by 8% or around 2% annually.

Burnett told Biden during a day trip to swing-state Wisconsin, "Voters by a wide margin trust Trump more on the economy — they say that in polls — and part of the reason for that may be the numbers."

She added, "And you’re aware of many of these, of course: the cost of buying a home in the United States is double what it was — when you look at your monthly costs — from before the pandemic, real income when you account for inflation is actually down since you took office, economic growth last week fell short of expectations, consumer confidence — maybe no surprise — is near a two-year low."

Burnett further asked, "With less than six months to go to election day, are you worried that you’re running out of time to turn that around?" Biden replied, "We’ve already turned it around."

He added, "Look at the [University of] Michigan survey — 65% of the American people think they’re in good shape economically. They think the nation is not in good shape. They’re personally in good shape. The polling data has been wrong all along."

After earlier attributing rising inflation to problems with the COVID-19 supply chain and Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Biden now blamed "corporate greed" and "shrinkflation" for the situation.

Internet slams Joe Biden for his statements on inflation

People on the internet slammed Joe Biden after he said that inflation was already at 9% when he took office and voters were wrong to hold him responsible for the high inflation rate.

One social media user wrote on X, "Biden is a Proven liar," while one added, "Well we all know he is a pathological liar....so guess no shocker."

One person stated, "50% of our country believe everything that comes out of this man’s mouth. Maddening," whereas another noted, "They don't even try anymore. They just completely make stuff up at this point and expect people to believe them."

Another added, "He even doesn't understand the difference between lie and truth. He always lies."
