WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden attributed the Arizona Supreme Court's ruling on Tuesday, April 9, to an 'extreme' GOP agenda, upholding an abortion statute that has been in place for more than 50 years, as per The Hill.

Biden said in a statement, "Millions of Arizonans will soon live under an even more extreme and dangerous abortion ban, which fails to protect women even when their health is at risk or in tragic cases of rape or incest."

Biden added, "This cruel ban was first enacted in 1864 — more than 150 years ago, before Arizona was even a state and well before women had secured the right to vote. This ruling is a result of the extreme agenda of Republican elected officials who are committed to ripping away women’s freedom."

Notably, in a 4-2 ruling, the Arizona Supreme Court dismissed arguments in favor of maintaining the 15-week abortion restriction. The 15-week abortion ban was first passed in 2022 when the US Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade.

Rather, the highest court in Arizona decided to uphold an 1864 statute that criminalizes abortion and imposes a two-to five-year jail sentence on anyone who performs the procedure or assists someone else in getting one. Additionally, the stay on the law was lifted by the court, and it will now take effect in two weeks.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said in a statement, "The decision made by the Arizona Supreme Court today is unconscionable and an affront to freedom. Make no mistake, by effectively striking down a law passed this century and replacing it with one from 160 years ago, the Court has risked the health and lives of Arizonans."

Notably, in his statement after the decision, Biden stated that he and Vice President Harris 'stand with the vast majority of Americans who support a woman's right to choose'.

He added, "We will continue to fight to protect reproductive rights and call on Congress to pass a law restoring the protections of Roe v Wade for women in every state."

Internet mocks Joe Biden's statement on Arizona abortion ruling
