Jamaal Bowman faces ridicule as he tells Stephen Colbert he's been 'bullied' in New York primary challenge
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Congressman Jamaal Bowman expressed feeling targeted and emotionally distressed during his primary campaign in the 16th district of New York against fellow Democrat George Latimer, describing himself as "bullied."
Speaking on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert', Bowman recounted how his wife reacted strongly to the challenges they faced, stating she was "pissed off" about the situation.
Standing firm against bullying
"They don’t want to see their husband and dad get bullied, so we’re pushing back a little bit," Bowman said, relating his wife and children's experience with his treatment during campaign season.
Bowman emphasized the impact on his family, noting they are determined to push back against what they perceive as unfair treatment. He highlighted his wife's resolve, saying she declared they would win the election with strong voter turnout, much like in 2020 when Bowman first won his seat by defeating longtime incumbent Eliot Engel.
During his interview with Colbert, Bowman also criticized Republicans for what he described as attempts to enforce uniform thinking across the nation, labeling them as "bullies." He stressed the importance of diversity in American strength.
"The Republicans are bullies," Bowman said. "Our strength is our diversity as a nation."
The primary race between Bowman and Latimer has attracted attention due to divisions within the Democratic Party, particularly regarding views on Israel. Latimer, who has garnered support from prominent figures and organizations like Hillary Clinton and AIPAC, currently leads Bowman in polling.
"AIPAC’s political arm also donated more than $1.5 million to Latimer during this campaign cycle," Bowman noted, highlighting financial support for his opponent.
