ATLANTA, GEORGIA: During the presidential debate President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in a heated exchange over the issue of abortion.

Early in the debate, CNN moderator Dana Bash asked about their stances on the issue. Biden committed to reinstating Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the US and was overturned in 2022.

The first presidential debate took place on Thursday, June 27.

Donald Trump, in contrast, voiced support for the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v Wade. He clarified that while he wouldn't advocate for a federal abortion ban, he favored allowing states to regulate pregnancies and penalize violations of their strict laws. Trump also emphasized exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and threats to the mother's life.

“It’s bringing it back to the vote of the people, which is what everybody wanted, including the founders,” Trump said. “Everybody wanted it brought back. And many Presidents had tried to get it back. I was the one to do it.”

Biden responded by stating, “The idea that the founders wanted the politicians to be the ones making decisions about women’s health is ridiculous.”

When asked about his stance on abortion pills following the Supreme Court's decision not to challenge the pregnancy termination pill mifepristone this month, Trump stated he would not hinder access to these medications, as per Time report.

However, Trump consistently criticized Biden for his promise to reinstate Roe v Wade, falsely claiming that this would allow doctors under the Biden administration to "end the life of a baby in the ninth month, and even after birth."

It's important to note that abortions do not occur "after birth," as that would constitute infanticide, which is illegal in all states. Late-term abortions are rare; in 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that less than 1% of abortions occurred after 21 weeks of gestation.

Biden criticized Trump for his role in the reversal of Roe v Wade, pointing out that Trump appointed three justices whose decisions were crucial in overturning it.

“It’s been a terrible thing what you’ve done,” Biden said to Trump.

The President sharply criticized abortion restrictions, particularly in Republican-controlled states like Georgia, where the debate took place last Thursday night. These states prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a period during which many women may not yet realize they are pregnant.

Donald Trump claims everyone wanted Roe v Wade overturned

According to Trump, "everybody, without exception—Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives—wanted Roe to be overturned, allowing each state to establish its own abortion laws."

Biden dismissed Trump's claim that "the vast majority of constitutional scholars" supported Roe when it was first decided as "just ridiculous." Numerous surveys indicate that the majority of Americans now support legal abortion.

During the debate, reproductive rights organizations expressed their opposition to Trump's remarks on abortion through social media.

Planned Parenthood Action posted on X, “This disinformation about abortion is meant to confuse people and distract from what Trump and his allies really want to do—ban all abortions.”
