WASHINGTON, DC: Leading Democrats have no intention of looking into reports that, following the 2020 election, Justice Samuel Alito of the Supreme Court flew an American flag upside down outside his residence. President Joe Biden doesn't even want to discuss it, according to Politico.

Biden and the White House have remained silent in the face of mounting calls from the party's grassroots to condemn the decisions made by several conservative judges and support court changes.

Republicans are weakening democratic norms and endangering democratic institutions, as Biden has openly warned. According to aides, he is hesitant to apply similar reasoning to the judicial branch, though, for fear that it would be interpreted as politically motivated and jeopardize his larger attempts to present himself as an advocate for bolstering democratic institutions.

Moreover, they think that to be politically relevant, it is imperative to remain in sharp contrast to Donald Trump, who has openly assailed an independent judiciary.

Arguing that Congress has wide-ranging investigatory authority, Anthony Coley, a former senior official in the Biden Justice Department said, "The central pushback should come from the legislative branch, and not the executive branch. That’s the right place where we should be seeing aggressive oversight, and right now they are not meeting the moment."

However, Dick Durbin, the Senate Judiciary Chair rejected requests to convene a hearing on the topic. The Illinois Democrat expressed disapproval of asking for Alito to testify, telling Politico that 'I don't think that's going to achieve anything' and that the chamber should instead discuss ethics measures for the Supreme Court that have already cleared his committee. Durbin requested a meeting with Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday, May 24, to talk about the issue.

Some Democrats and supporters of court reform, who contend that the president has a moral duty to address the Alito controversy and that the Supreme Court justice has given Biden a great opportunity to emphasize the importance of the election, are perplexed and alarmed by the administration's reluctance to address the controversy directly.

Others within the party think that Biden's strategy is out of date and fails to take into account how Republicans have politicized and given precedence to discussions about the judiciary.

Gabe Roth, executive director of judicial accountability organization Fix the Court said, "The idea that you’re just going to shrug it off and not take action just sends the wrong signal. I don’t quite get the hands-off approach here."

Internet slams Joe Biden for remaining mum over Samuel Alito flag controversy

Several internet users slammed Joe Biden as he has remained silent over the Samuel Alito flag controversy and doesn't even want to discuss it.

A user wrote on X, "Smart, bc he's going to be dealing w his own issues, soon enough" while one added, "Probably because his advisors know Alito is protected by the constitution. Altio has a lifetime appointment. Snowflakes need to get over it."

A person also stated, "Because Biden's corruption is real and he knows better. He's trying to prosecute his competition for President" whereas one mentioned, "If Trump was in office and one of the liberal justices had an ethics violation the knives would be out. Sometimes Biden has to be aggressive."

A user added, "There is no controversy, Alito has done nothing wrong."
