Jon Stewart calls Biden 'Trumpian' for arrogant reelection bid, slams POTUS' interview after CNN debate
WASHINGTON, DC: Comedian and writer Jon Stewart has voiced concerns that President Joe Biden is "becoming Trumpian" in his efforts to manage the backlash he has been facing following his disastrous debate performance on June 27.
In his recent 'Weekly Show' podcast, Stewart criticized the Democratic Party's response to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.
Jon Stewart slams Democrats' code of silence to suppress talks about Joe Biden's second term
Jon Stewart suggested that Democrats are employing a code of silence, "omerta" to suppress discussions about Joe Biden's capability to serve another four-year term after his debate performance sparked concerns over his age and mental fitness.
Speaking to guests Tommy Vietor and Jon Favreau, the Obama-era aides and founders of Crooked Media, Stewart said, “All I’m saying is if we are taking an honest look at what our best chance to defend ourselves against a perceived threat, I think we are selling ourselves short."
“And in a lot of ways, using — as, as Tommy put it — omerta to stifle what could be an incredibly productive, at least conversation," he added.
The comedian further referenced Biden's recent interview with ABC News's George Stephanopoulos following the debate, where the president declared, “And who’s gonna be able to hold NATO together like me?” and that only the “Lord Almighty” could make him withdraw from the 2024 race.
Arguing that such statements are reminiscent of Trump's styling, Stewart, the former late-night host said, “Even if Joe Biden came out and said, ‘Look, I understand where I’m at in my life span and cycle and what I do. Here’s how this government works.’"
"Rather than coming out and becoming Trumpian and saying, ‘You think someone else could hold NATO together, they could never; only God can tell me to get out of the race," he said in his podcast.
Jon Stewart calls for transparency and confidence
While Jon Stewart did not explicitly call for Joe Biden to quit his reelection bid, he criticized the president's campaign team handling the situation, according to The Hill.
On 'The Daily Show' earlier this week, Stewart labeled the excuses for Biden's debate performance as "bull***t."
“Like, if you were to come out and say, ‘Here’s, here’s my team. Here’s how we hold the line.’ But we’re not seeing any of that. Nothing that’s been done inspires any confidence other than the fatalism of, ‘It is what it is, and this is what we’re stuck with,’” said Stewart.
“And that’s the part that I think has degraded people’s trust in institutions and the government from the get-go. That’s a problem," he concluded.
