WASHINGTON, DC: A second flag, similar to the one flown by protestors during the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, was flown outside Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's residence in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, in the summer of last year.

An 'Appeal to Heaven' flag was reportedly displayed outside Alito's beach vacation home in 2023. Additionally, an inverted American flag, also a symbol brandished by rioters, was observed at Alito's residence near Washington shortly after the Capitol riot.

Upside-down flag at Justice Samuel Alito's beach house sparked controversy

The revelation of the upside-down American flag caused significant controversy last week, leading to demands from senior Democrats for Alito to step back from election-related cases involving former President Donald Trump.

Alito and the court have not responded to inquiries about the reasons for flying the 'Appeal to Heaven' flag or its intended message. He previously stated that his wife flew the inverted American flag during a dispute with neighbors, and he was not involved.

The white flag featuring a green pine tree was observed at Alito's beach house in New Jersey, as evidenced by three photographs acquired by The New York Times, taken on various dates in July and September 2023.

However, the duration of the flag's display and the amount of time Alito spent at the residence remain unclear.

Originally from the Revolutionary War era, the flag has recently been linked to far-right Christian nationalism and support for Trump, and was seen carried by rioters driven by Trump's 'Stop the Steal' campaign, which was based on claims of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election that he lost to Joe Biden.

Justice Samuel Alito is involved in two ongoing Supreme Court cases

Republicans in Congress and state officials have displayed the flag as well. House Speaker Mike Johnson placed it outside his office last fall after his election to the speakership, Newsmax reported.

His spokesperson stated that the speaker values the flag's historical significance, which was presented to him by a pastor who has served as a guest chaplain in the House.

Justice Alito is involved in two ongoing Supreme Court cases related to January 6th: one concerning President Trump's immunity from prosecution for his actions to overturn the 2020 election results, and another regarding the applicability of a specific obstruction charge to the rioters.

Additionally, he took part in the court's unanimous decision that states are not permitted to exclude Trump from the ballot under the "insurrection clause" introduced to the Constitution post-Civil War.

There is no suggestion that Justice Alito will recuse himself from these cases. related to January 6: one concerning President Trump's immunity from prosecution for his actions to overturn the 2020 election results, and another regarding the applicability of a specific obstruction charge against the rioters.

Internet demands 'impeachment' for Justice Samuel Alito

As soon as the image went viral on the internet, social media users shared their views. One wrote demanding, "Thomas and Alito should he impeached."

Another user added, "He must be forced to resign."

One commentator dubbed Justice Alito as a "traitor" and said, "He needs to be forced to resign. He’s a traitor to the United States."

One person showcased anger saying, "OMG when are we going to call it out for “enough already” !??! This guy is an election denier, clearly in Trump’s corner and is a superior court judge!!! This is Bull crap. So unethical. This is third world stuff, Recusal now"
