INDIO, CALIFORNIA: Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance has sparked a wider debate about gender bias after it was compared to Sabrina Carpenter’s headline set. Both artists performed as headliners on consecutive days. Sabrina headlined the festival’s 25th edition on April 10, while Justin took the stage the following day on April 11.

However, Bieber’s set drew criticism online, with some calling it “lazy” compared to Carpenter’s performance. The backlash has since evolved into a broader discussion about how male and female performers are judged differently by Coachella audiences and fans.

Coachella performances spark debate over different expectations for artists

A wider discussion has emerged at Coachella after Justin Bieber’s performance was compared with Sabrina Carpenter’s headline show. Some observers argued that a similarly low-key approach from Sabrina Carpenter would not have been received the same way.

Carpenter delivered a 21-song set featuring multiple costume changes and a highly theatrical production. Her performance also included surprise appearances from Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, Corey Fogelmanis, and Sam Elliott, and a voice cameo from Samuel L Jackson.

She opened in a short red dress before changing into a black outfit later in the set, adding to the visual progression of the show.

In contrast, Justin Bieber reportedly earned around $10 million for his 90-minute set, which featured songs from 'SWAG' and 'SWAG II,' along with a throwback segment. He also performed fan-requested tracks such as 'Baby,' 'Never Say Never,' and 'Forever Girl.'

The performance was notably stripped back, with Bieber appearing in a red puffer jacket, shorts, and sunglasses. There were no background dancers or choreographed routines, and the focus remained on a straightforward stage presentation.

The comparison between the two shows has led to ongoing discussion about differing expectations placed on male and female artists at major festivals.

Netizens compare Sabrina Carpenter’s performance to Justin Bieber’s set

Social media is not at all okay with discrimination. They lashed out and compared the two A-listers during the weekend at one of the music festivals.

One user said, "Justin’s Coachella set is a prime example of how women have to work harder than men in the music industry. Sabrina Carpenter gave it her all last night, while Justin Bieber is putting on a snoozefest with his Swag songs."

Another noted, "The difference between Sabrina and his performance is actually insane. Men really get away with anything frr"

A third user shared, "Sabrina is literally the definition of a REAL pop star. She’s built for stardom and knows how to deliver a full show. A man wouldn’t be able to pull off that level of performance, not even in his dreams."

"I feel like Sabrina carpenter's performance is more pure and fun . Justin doing great but it was all youtube and all but sabreena sang beautifully the other night," a fourth commentator added.

One said, "Justin was more nostalgic but Sabrina’s set was 100 times better in my opinion"

"If Sabrina Carpenter did what Justin Bieber is doing right now, her career would be over," a fifth user noted.

"there is a night and day difference between sabrina carpenter’s coachella set and justin bieber’s coachella set," another mentioned.
