Kamala Harris breaks with her own 2024 campaign as 2028 speculation grows
WASHINGTON, DC: Former Vice President Kamala Harris has embraced a series of progressive proposals she notably avoided during her 2024 presidential campaign, marking her clearest public repositioning yet as speculation mounts over a possible 2028 White House bid.
Speaking Friday at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Harris endorsed expanding the Supreme Court, abolishing the Electoral College, and revisiting Puerto Rico statehood, positions that go beyond the platform she ran on against President Donald Trump.
While insisting she has not decided whether to seek the presidency again, Harris' latest remarks come as Democratic strategists increasingly view her as a leading contender for the party's next nomination.

The most striking change in Harris' remarks was not simply the policies themselves, but their contrast with her 2024 campaign.
During her White House run, Harris backed ethics reforms and term limits for Supreme Court justices but stopped short of advocating court expansion.
On Friday, she openly endorsed increasing the court's size to 13 justices, arguing that the country should revisit the proposal.
She also called for a “real conversation” about eliminating the Electoral College, acknowledging the position would be controversial, particularly given that she lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote to Trump in 2024.
The comments signal a broader shift toward priorities long championed by the Democratic Party's progressive wing.

Despite unveiling new positions, Harris declined to formally enter the next presidential race.
“I have not made a decision,” she told attendees, adding that her immediate focus remains on the 2026 midterm elections.
Still, the timing of the policy shift is significant.
In recent months, Harris has strengthened ties with prominent progressives, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, fueling speculation that she is consolidating support within the party's left flank before making a final decision about 2028.
New strategy takes shape
Harris' remarks suggest she is beginning to define a political identity that differs from the more cautious approach she adopted during the 2024 campaign.
Rather than revisiting familiar themes from her previous White House bid, she is publicly embracing issues that appeal to progressive activists while keeping her presidential plans open.
