DETROIT, MICHIGAN: Kamala Harris sparked controversy during her Labor Day rally in Detroit, Michigan, where she spoke to a crowd of union workers using what some critics have called a "new accent."

The rally on Monday, September 2, was part of her efforts to appeal to blue-collar voters in the key battleground state which the Biden-Harris ticket hopes to keep blue in the 2024 presidential election.

Kamala Harris advocates for union workers

Kamala Harris’ Labor Day speech emphasized on the contributions of union workers to labor rights, highlighting the benefits that unions have secured for American workers, according to Fox News.

“You better thank a union member for the five-day work week,” the vice president told the crowd, with a notable shift in her dialect.

“You better thank a union member for sick leave. You better thank a union member for paid leave. You better thank a union member for vacation time," she continued.

The Democratic presidential nominee’s remarks aimed to rally support from union members and emphasize her commitment to labor rights.

However, it was her speech delivery that quickly became a talking point.

GOP critics slam Kamala Harris’ use of ‘Detroit Speak’

The use of what was perceived as a shift in accent during Kamala Harris' rally speech drew criticism from conservative circles.

A clip of Harris’ speech was shared on social media by the conservative X account Johnny MAGA, labeling the vice president’s speaking style as “cringe and fake.”

Donald Trump's senior advisor Stephen Miller weighed in, stating, “This is her seventh new accent in four weeks. She has literally never used this accent before. She grew up in Canada. Phoniest politician in all of politics.”

Other critics echoed similar sentiments as they questioned the authenticity of Harris’ approach.

Criticizing the shift in accent, professor and podcast host Gad Saad said, “There are countless traits that I despise in humans, few as much as inauthenticity.”

GOP strategist Matt Whitlock noted, “All of politics is a performance to Kamala Harris. She changes fake accents like she changes policy positions and political personas."

"Today she’s talking in a fake southern accent, pretending to be a moderate. Next week she’ll be back to San Francisco liberal," she added.

Kamala Harris responds to crowd’s enthusiasm

During the Detroit rally, an individual from the crowd shouted a question hinting at Kamala Harris’ future ambitions beyond the upcoming November election.

The vice president, maintaining her altered speaking style, responded with a broad smile and a laugh, leaning over the podium to say, “Let’s just get through the next 64 days.”
