AUSTIN, TEXAS: Katie Holmes has paid an emotional tribute to her ‘Dawson’s Creek’ co-star James Van Der Beek, who died at 48 on February 11. Van Der Beek had been battling colorectal cancer since 2023 and revealed his diagnosis publicly in 2024, sharing his journey with fans along the way.

A statement on Van Der Beek’s Instagram confirmed his passing: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.”

Holmes, who starred opposite Van Der Beek on the teen drama that defined a generation, reflected on their time together and expressed the difficulty of processing the loss.

“I formed some words with a heavy heart. This is a lot to process. I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James’ journey. He is beloved,” she wrote.

The actress highlighted how the series shaped their careers. Van Der Beek went on to appear in shows like ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Ugly Betty,’ but Holmes emphasized the personal connection they shared on set.

Memories of youth, friendship and imagination

Holmes’ tribute delved into the creative bond they formed, describing their time on set in deeply personal terms.

“James. Thank you. To share space with your imagination is sacred—breathing the same air in the land of make-believe and trusting that each other's hearts are safe in their expression,” she wrote.

She recalled their laughter, music, and conversations: “These are some of the memories along with Laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs—adventures of a unique youth.” Holmes praised Van Der Beek’s character beyond acting: “Bravery. Compassion. Selflessness. Strength. An appreciation for life and the action taken to live life with integrity—creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children—the journey of a Hero.”

Support pours in for Kimberly Van Der Beek and six children

Holmes emphasized her support for Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, and their six children.

“I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it. To Kimberly and the children, we are here for you always, and will always be there to shower you with love and compassion.”

A fundraiser for the family quickly raised over $1 million in less than 24 hours, reflecting the outpouring of support from fans and friends. Despite his health struggles, Van Der Beek had remained active on social media, sharing messages of hope and resilience.
