BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: In a bold move, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) launched his first attack advertisement against Senate opponent Angela Alsobrooks (D) on Friday, June 21.

Titled "Just the Facts," the one-minute ad scrutinizes Alsobrooks’s record on crime, accusing the Prince George’s County executive of misleading the public about falling crime rates under her leadership.

Larry Hogan challenges Angela Alsobrooks' claims regarding falling crime rates

Hogan’s ad alleges that while Alsobrooks claims a "50 percent decrease in crime," violent crime has actually increased by about 30 percent since she took office in late 2018. The 50 percent reduction, Hogan points out, refers to federal data from her tenure as county prosecutor from 2011 to 2018, when crime did indeed drop significantly.

The ad contrasts this with the reality since Alsobrooks became the county executive. According to FBI data, overall crime in Prince George’s County has risen by 33 percent through 2022, though it remains lower than any year before her time as state’s attorney.

This year, county police data shows total crime has decreased by 10 percent, but violent crime has increased by 12 percent, largely due to domestic violence and assault arrests. Ending with a sharp critique, the ad labels Alsobrooks as "another typical politician who doesn’t deliver."

In an interview, Hogan defended his approach, saying, "I don’t know if it’s an attack ad. It’s more of a comparison. It’s all factual, and it’s about her record. I’m not attacking her personally. They’ve been pretty personal and pretty negative from Day 1 since the day I announced. This is more, like, 'Hey, maybe you weren’t aware of the fact that her record on crime is terrible,'" as per The Washington Examiner.

Internet reacts to Larry Hogan's first campaign ad attacking Angela Alsobrooks

Soon after Hogan's ad attacking Alsobrooks came to light, netizens wasted no time in sharing their thoughts.

One said, "Larry saw the polls today! He's getting smoked! Marylanders trust Angela Alsobrooks, not Old Governor," and another noted, "Stop lying and fear mongering!"

A person wrote, "She's misleading people? You still call yourself 'Governor Larry Hogan.'" "Yes, we deserve a true conservative leader, not a RINO," expressed someone else, possibly alluding to his decision to downplay Donald Trump's endorsement and his constant attempt to distance himself from the former president.

"As expected, he seen the poll numbers & the attacks and dog whistles will soon follow," shared an individual.
