Kamala Harris joined the singer at a rally in Detroit on Saturday, where they both celebrated the city, following former president Trump's criticism of it during his speech at the Detroit Economic Club the previous week.
“I mean, the whole country is going to be like — you want to know the truth — it’ll be like Detroit. Our whole country will end up being like Detroit.”
"I'm so proud to be from this city," Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, told the crowd. "You know they say if Kamala wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit. Proud like Detroit, resilient like Detroit. The same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry. Put some respect on Detroit's name."
Once the heart of American industry, the automaking hub has experienced a sharp economic decline as US car companies moved jobs overseas and the nation increased its imports of foreign vehicles.
Today, Detroit faces an unemployment rate of 8.8%, more than double the national average.
Despite Lizzo’s celebratory tone, her remarks quickly ignited backlash on social media. Critics were quick to highlight the city’s long-standing economic struggles and urban decay, questioning her portrayal of Detroit as an ideal model for the nation.
Many users pointed out that Detroit has faced challenges for decades, from population decline to financial instability, making her statement controversial and polarizing.

"Detroit is one of the worst cities in America with low quality of living and absurdly high crime," wrote another user. "If Kamala wins, the whole country will be like Detroit' is probably the worst thing she could’ve said."

Critics also questioned the role of celebrity endorsements in political discourse, with one user commenting, "Lizzo's appearance at the Kamala Harris rally, while energizing, risks overshadowing serious political discourse with celebrity culture. Using a platform to promote a political figure can dilute important messages and reduce complex issues to mere entertainment. It’s crucial to focus on substantial policy discussions rather than relying solely on star power to galvanize support."
