Lou Dobbs: Donald Trump condoles death of ‘friend’ and conservative political commentator at 78
CHILDRESS COUNTY, TEXAS: Louis Earl Dobbs, also known as Lou Dobbs, a conservative political commentator, author, and television host died at the age of 78 on July 18, 2024.
The news was confirmed after former president Donald Trump announced Dobbs' death on July 18, via the Truth Social platform. This was further corroborated by a statement on one of Mr Dobbs's social media accounts. Dobbs had a long career as a business news anchor at CNN before becoming one of Trump's staunchest defenders as a host on Fox.
Donald Trump announces Lou Dobbs’ death
Former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, "The Great Lou Dobbs has just passed away. He understood the World, and what was ‘happening,’ better than others."
He added, "Lou was unique in so many ways, and loved our Country. Our warmest condolences to his wonderful wife, Debi, and family. He will be greatly missed."
Dobbs' Twitter page also said, "It's with a heavy heart. That we announce the passing of the 'The Great Lou Dobbs.' Lou was a fighter till the very end fighting for what mattered to him the most, God, his family and the country. Lou's legacy will forever live on as a Patriot and a Great American. We ask for your prayers for Lou's wonderful wife Debi, children and grandchildren."
Lou Dobbs’ talk show career and close relationship with Donald Trump
Hosting 'Lou Dobbs Tonight' was one of the pundit's most notable roles. The political talk show originally aired as 'Moneyline' on CNN before being retitled in his name. After leaving CNN, Dobbs revived the show on Fox Business Network, where it aired until February 2021
In 2021, Dobbs started hosting 'The Great America Show' on iHeartRadio and louddobbs.com. A new episode of the show, featuring a guest host, was posted on Dobbs' personal social media accounts just three hours before his death was announced.
Dobbs and Trump developed a close relationship over the years. During Trump's presidency, he and members of his administration frequently appeared on Dobbs' talk show. CNN reported that Trump often praised Dobbs and shared clips of his show on his social media channels.
Throughout his career, Dobbs, like Trump, faced backlash. He openly promoted birtherism, the false theory that former President Barack Obama was not born in the United States, and conspiracies about voting machines contributing to President Biden's 2020 victory.
Dobbs' Fox show was canceled one day after voting software company Smartmatic filed a lawsuit against the network, which is still being litigated.
A statement by Fox News Media read, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lou Dobbs. An incredible business mind with a gift for broadcasting, Lou helped pioneer cable news into a successful and influential industry. We are immensely grateful for his many contributions and send our heartfelt condolences to his family.
