NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Lupita Nyong'o addressed the backlash surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey', online debate questioned her portrayal of the mythological figure known as “the most beautiful woman in the world.” The actor responded to the criticism while focusing on what the role represents beyond appearance.

The Oscar-winning actor reflected on her approach to the character during an interview with Elle, emphasizing interpretation, writing, and character depth over external expectations tied to beauty standards.

During the conversation, Lupita Nyong'o was asked about portraying Helen of Troy, a figure historically defined by her beauty. She rejected the idea that such a role should be reduced to appearance alone.

“I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she said.

She added, “You can’t perform beauty,” explaining that her focus remains on understanding the character rather than embodying an external ideal.

Nyong'o further noted that her process begins with the script itself. “The investigation starts with the pages you’re given. That’s what I based it on,” she said.

Nyong'o explained that working on a well-known mythological text allows for multiple interpretations depending on the writing and direction.

She also supported Christopher Nolan’s creative vision, saying, “I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense.”

She added, “It’s quite something to be a part of ‘The Odyssey’, because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time.”

The online discourse intensified after Elon Musk publicly criticized Christopher Nolan’s casting decision on X, writing, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”



Months later, Musk revisited the discussion, further fueling debate over the film’s casting choices and creative direction.

In response, Alec Baldwin defended Nyong'o on social media, praising her portrayal and writing, “Dear Elon… but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world...Alec.”

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel also addressed the controversy during a monologue, urging Musk to “stay in (his) lane.”

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan stood by his casting decision, telling the magazine, “The strength and the poise were so important to the character of Helen. And Lupita makes it look effortless.”
