Massive winter storm puts 60 million under alert as NYC braces for record breaking snowfall

Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, as Mayor Eric Adams noted that sanitation crews were pre-deployed

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A winter storm is set to make Christmas week dangerous for those residing in New York, as the city is likely to see more snow than it has in years. 

On Friday, December 26, the National Weather Service announced that the evening is expected to see the “heaviest snow,” which could exceed “an inch per hour” in some areas.

Other neighboring regions are also set to be hit by a snowstorm, including Baltimore, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams urge New Yorkers to avoid travel

The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, issued a statement on X, urging people to stay indoors. She informed them of the upcoming storm, noting that it would impact several areas, starting Friday afternoon.

She further encouraged people to monitor local forecasts and avoid “unnecessary travel.” She added that if it was impossible to avoid, people should plan ahead and “take it slow.”

“Leave plenty of time to get where you need to go safely,” she added.

Mayor Eric Adams also took to X to caution New Yorkers about the upcoming storm.

He wrote that the storm was set to continue till 1 pm on Saturday, and he urged everyone to “stay off the roads.”

He added that snowfall could begin around 3 pm on Friday and said that the total accumulation was expected between 6 and 9 inches. 



He added that the New York City Sanitation Department already had its crew on the ground to "pre-treat" the roads and would start plowing once 2 inches of snow had fallen.

The New York State Department of Transportation also took to X to inform civilians of its preparedness. It wrote that the NYSDOT teams were “actively” monitoring conditions and were prepared to respond across New York. 

NWS issues urgent weather message

At 1.04 pm EST, the National Weather Service announced that the winter “storm warning” would be in effect from 7 pm Friday to 1 pm EST on Saturday.

It added that “heavy snow” was expected in the Northern Middlesex, Northern New London, Southern Middlesex, and Southern New London Counties.



According to the NWS, it would impact roads, especially bridges and overpasses and visibility may drop before ¼ mile due to “falling and blowing snow.”

It issued precautionary measures for civilians, urging them to delay “all travels.” It added that if travel was unavoidable, people should take a “winter storm kit” including t chains, booster cables, flashlights, a shovel, blankets, and extra clothing.
