Meryl Streep reportedly set to skip Met Gala yet again: ‘Never quite been her scene’

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Meryl Streep isn’t expected to make Met Gala appearance this year, even after the chatter that she could be tapped as a co-chair. Streep's representative shut that down while speaking to Metro, making it clear this isn’t a last-minute change of plans, it’s just "never quite been her scene."

Usually, when an actor plays a strong, memorable character, fans expect them to show up at big events. However, it seems Streep isn’t part of that crowd.

Her name has been trending largely because of the sequel to 'The Devil Wears Prada 2,' released on Friday, May 1. In the film, she returns as Miranda Priestly, the sharp and blunt editor of Runway magazine, a role is widely seen as a fictional take on Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala is scheduled take place on Monday, May 4.

Meryl Streep may not attend Met Gala 

As Meryl Streep's representative, “Meryl has been invited to the Met Gala for many years but has never attended. While she appreciates Vogue, Anna, and her incredible imagination and stamina, it has never quite been her scene.” That clarification also puts to rest the talk that she might co-chair the event, a rumor that had been making rounds in recent weeks.

Streep’s absence may disappoint fans, especially with renewed attention on her iconic Miranda Priestly, aka the commanding editor she plays in 'The Devil Wears Prada 2.' The strong character’s influence still looms large in fashion and pop culture, proving how one powerful role can define an era.

For those unaware, the Met Gala happens every year on the first Monday of May. It takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to open the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. And Streep isn’t the only one opting out. Zendaya is also reportedly among the A-listers skipping this year’s event.

Who’s attending and skipping the 2026 Met Gala?

Even though Meryl Streep is sitting this one out, her family will still have a presence. Her daughters, Grace Gummer and Mamie Gummer, are expected to attend. So are her 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' co-stars Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, according to Page Six.

The event itself is still stacked with big names. Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, are serving as honorary co-chairs and major sponsors for the 2026 gala. Beyoncé is also making a highly anticipated return after nearly a decade, joining co-chairs Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams.

For those unfamiliar, the 2026 Met Gala theme is "Costume Art," paired with the dress code 'Fashion is Art.' The concept treats the body as a canvas and celebrates the link between fashion and art history, tied to the new Conde Nast Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
