WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson voiced criticism of President Joe Biden's decision to liquidate the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve (NGSR), a regional reserve of 1 million barrels intended as an emergency fuel supply for northeastern states.

Johnson's remarks shared on X, accused the Biden administration of only addressing public concerns when seeking votes, a sentiment echoed by many online users. "It’s clear that the Biden Administration only cares about the American people’s concerns when it’s time to beg for their votes. Disgraceful," wrote Johnson.

Mike Johnson passed the NGSR selloff

However, Johnson received swift backlash as numerous individuals pointed out a glaring inconsistency, Johnson himself had approved the selloff of the NGSR as part of a recent bipartisan appropriations deal.

This plan, detailed in March by Newsweek, involved selling off a million barrels of the government's strategic petroleum reserve, equivalent to the NGSR's inventory. The NGSR located in New York Harbor, Boston, Massachusetts, and South Portland, Maine, was slated for closure under the bill was "the result of cross-party negotiations."

Adding to the criticism, Patrick de Haan, an oil industry expert overseeing petroleum analysis for Gas Buddy, highlighted that the initiative was originally proposed during the Trump administration questioning him, "Why u mad? It was the Trump administration's idea."

De Haan shared a previous report outlining the Trump administration's rationale, which cited "The NGSR is very costly to maintain, has not been used for its intended purpose, and is not a practical solution for a severe supply interruption, as, for example, the reserve would only be able to meet one day's worth of gasoline demand in the Northeast States."

Internet exposes Mike Johnson's hypocrisy

A user tweeted, "Lol you put this in the budget that YOU passed." Another added, "Republicans: 'Biden needs to fix these damn gas prices! We have no idea how, but he better get on it!' Biden: *does something to lower gas prices* Republicans: "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Why is Biden lowering gas prices? This is a scam! He can’t just go around fixing things!"

"That was in your bill Moses," mocked a user. "You are an accomplice. Stop pandering," read a tweet. "You are a hypocrite Mike! You gave Ukraine more of our money and didnt secure the border! you are a dem in republican clothing! we deserve better," stated a user.

"Mike, drop the act! You're not fooling anyone with your attempt at toughness. You're just another part of the uniparty, serving Biden instead of the American people. Close the border," penned a user.

"Lie. This facility closure was ordered by Republicans in Legislation. This was part of the ransom package extracted by Republicans the last time the GOP threatened to shut down the United States Government, again. Do you not remember your own corrupt legislation?" questioned a user
