'I’ll give you one line': Mike Johnson mimics Donald Trump on public request at RNC

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) entertained attendees at the Republic National Convention (RNC) with a lively impression of former president Donald Trump.

Johnson shared a personal story involving a near-tragedy and Trump's subsequent concern for his family, using the opportunity to mimic the former president's distinctive voice and mannerisms.

Mike Johnson detailed the heartfelt conversation he had with Donald Trump after two of his sons nearly drowned while swimming off the coast of Florida.

Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition event, the speaker set the scene, explaining how Trump reached out to him following the near-tragic incident.

“But we left and went back to Louisiana to recover. And President Trump heard the story. So he called me in the next night and he said, ‘Mike’ — I’m not going to do it in his voice, because that’s how I hear it, sorry," said Johnson, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Despite initial reluctance, Johnson was encouraged by the audience's response to perform the impression.

“Oh you sound disappointed!” he quipped, before continuing to agree.

Impersonating Donald Trump, Mike Johnson said, “I’ll give you one line OK, he goes — this is the first thing I think of — ‘Mike, Mike! Those beautiful perfect American boys. We almost lost them Mike! What happened?’”

The House speaker shared how Trump continued to express concern for his sons in subsequent conversations following the incident in November 2023.

“He brought this up at the beginning of every conversation. He was so moved by the fact that we almost — he said, ‘You wouldn’t have even had Thanksgiving, Mike. You’d never have another Thanksgiving,” said the speaker who continued miming Trump’s voice.



 

Speaker Mike Johnson's sons face near-drowning incident in Florida

Mike Johnson recalled the frightening experience in November 2023 when his 18-year-old and 13-year-old sons were pulled into the sea by a riptide while swimming off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida.

Lifeguards quickly intervened, rescuing the boys on Jet Skis and ensuring they received medical attention. The speaker's children spent several hours in the emergency room but have since fully recovered.

While the incident was terrifying for his family, Johnson reassured the audience on Thursday, July 18 that his sons are now doing fine, according to The Hill.
