NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On February 21, former CNN anchor John Avlon initiated his bid to challenge Representative Nick LaLota (R-NY) in New York's 1st Congressional District.

Avlon, 51, is set to run under the Democratic banner in the district previously represented by Republican Lee Zeldin, covering sections of Suffolk County and eastern Long Island.

Avlon announces congressional run after CNN departure noting, 'stakes are too high'

This recent move follows Avlon's departure from CNN, where he held roles as an anchor and political analyst, just a fortnight ago.

Before his stint at CNN, he held prominent positions such as editor-in-chief at the Daily Beast and served as a speechwriter for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Avlon expressed in a video shared on X, "I believe the United States is the greatest democracy the world has ever known. And right now, our democracy is in danger".

“This election is not a drill. It’s up to all of us to step up and get off the sidelines. And that’s why I’m running for Congress in New York’s first district", he continued

He emphasized his message, "There's just too much at stake for the country and the community I love."

Avlon underscored the urgent need to unite diverse groups to oppose Donald Trump, protect democracy, and reclaim control of the House from his MAGA followers, who seem indifferent to pressing concerns.

Avlon committed that his campaign would place a strong emphasis on rejuvenating the middle class, investing significantly in infrastructure, preserving access to abortion, and confronting the complexities of climate change directly.

"Democrats cannot afford to falter in this endeavor," he stressed. The Cook Political Report, known for its non-partisan analysis, currently assesses New York's 1st Congressional District as "likely Republican" for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Avlon faces opposition in bid for New York's congressional seat

In the primary scheduled for June 25, Avlon will face competition from multiple Democratic contenders. It's worth noting that LaLota secured the House seat in 2022 with a comfortable 10-point margin.

The campaign of the incumbent first-term congressman swiftly dismissed Avlon's challenge.

In a statement, LaLota spokesperson Will Kiley asserted, "John Avlon is a Manhattan elitist without any attachments to Long Island other than his summer home in the Hamptons".

Kiley further remarked, "Avlon knows nothing about Suffolk County other than Sag Harbor croquet matches and summer cocktail parties in Bridgehampton".

He suggested that Avlon's attempt to represent New York's 1st Congressional District may require an excessive expenditure of his associates' funds to familiarize himself with the area's dynamics.

Kiley emphasized the district's history of rebuffing outsiders, particularly those from Manhattan, regardless of their political affiliation, who seek to purchase a congressional seat.

Kiley concluded by portraying LaLota as "the common sense conservative voice Long Island needs at this crucial time in our great nation’s history."

In light of these developments, netizens took to Twitter, with one expressing, "Oh you're running as a Democrat? Shocked".

"YES! Now you can talk down to even more people who never watched you on CNN!!", wrote another well-wisher.

Another surprised viewer said, "Wow, I never saw this coming. Good luck John!".

Another chimed in, "Well, that explains things! Congrats, John! Good luck! Go win that seat!".
