WASHINGTON, DC: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga) has urged Donald Trump to adopt a humorous approach rather than anger when confronting President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential debate.

During his recent appearance on Fox News, Gingrich said, “My advice to Trump would be deal with Biden with humor, not anger, because Biden is pathetic. And as you know, I think he’s so dishonest that you can’t take him seriously."

Newt Gingrich says Donald Trump has to 'be calm' during the debate against Joe Biden

In the interview on Friday, June 21, Gingrich said, “All Trump has to do is be calm."

"Maybe ask Biden some questions like, ‘Did you really known Vladimir Putin when he was a lieutenant colonel in the KGB in East Germany?’ — which Biden claimed he did. Or, ‘Do you believe your uncle was eaten by cannibals?'” he added.

In April, Biden implied that after his Army Air Corps aviator uncle Second Lt Ambrose J Finnegan Jr shot down over Papua New Guinea during World War II, he was eaten by cannibals.

The president's remark was criticized by Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape, who stated that his country could not be associated with cannibalism.

Gingrich also suggested that Trump shoot his questions at the president's son Hunter Biden and the laptop controversy, according to The Hill.

He went on to suggest Trump ask Biden questions targeting his son, Hunter Biden, and the 2020 laptop controversy, to provoke a reaction from him.

When is the presidential debate set to be held?

Trump and Biden are set to participate in the presidential debate in Atlanta organized by CNN on June 27.

Before the deadline, both the candidates met the debate requirement recently while other candidates including Green Party's Jill Stein and independent candidates including Robert F Kennedy, according to The Hill.

The two candidates face concerns over their fitness for office, including issues related to their age and temperament.

Newt Gingrich says the debate will be an 'uphill climb' for Joe Biden

Speaking about the upcoming debate, Gingrich said, “anybody could recover from anything” but pointed to the specific challenges he believes Biden faces.

“The problem for Biden is that he has a huge, uphill climb. The morning after this debate, Americans are going to go back to the grocery store, they’re going to be reminded of how expensive everything is," said Gingrich.

"Within two or three days [after] the debate, some illegal migrant is going to commit a crime that makes national news,” he added.
