WASHINGTON, DC: On Presidents Day, observed across the United States on the third Monday of February, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued a statement urging Americans to reflect on the nation’s founding principles and the responsibilities of presidential leadership.

Pelosi emphasized the importance of grounding the presidency in the US Constitution, respecting the rule of law, and safeguarding democratic institutions. She framed these values as central to American identity and enduring governance.

Pelosi talks of ‘greatness of America’

In her message, Pelosi highlighted that America’s strength stems from leaders who understand that presidential power originates from the people and must remain within constitutional limits.

“On #PresidentsDay, we honor those who understood that the presidency must be grounded in the Constitution, the rule of law and respect for our democracy. The greatness of America has always depended on leaders knowing the office’s power comes from the people, for the people,” Pelosi wrote on social media.

She added that the holiday, when government offices, schools, and markets typically close, is a chance to remember and honor leaders who upheld democracy and respected the law.

Presidents Day, originally established to celebrate George Washington’s birthday in the 19th century, has evolved to honor all US presidents, including Abraham Lincoln. The federal holiday was later moved to a Monday to create a long weekend, and over time became a broader occasion to reflect on presidential leadership and the country’s democratic evolution.

Across the United States, the day is observed with a mix of commemorations. Schools and local organizations often hold lessons and events focused on American history and presidential legacies. Meanwhile, government offices, courts, and financial markets usually close, and retailers offer holiday sales and promotions.

Pelosi’s statement reinforced the longstanding themes tied to Presidents Day: honoring leaders who respected constitutional limits and recognizing that true power lies with the people.
