Controllers radioed, “Welcome home, Charlie. You didn’t deserve it… May God bless your family.” The words, shared in the presence of flight crews and relayed publicly, resonated with those mourning the 31-year-old conservative activist’s sudden death.

The message reflected the overwhelming sadness and admiration many Americans have expressed since Kirk was fatally shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

The vice president, who had cancelled plans to attend the commemoration at Ground Zero in New York on Thursday, personally accompanied the casket earlier in Salt Lake City. At Roland R Wright Air National Guard Base, the 41-year-old was among the pallbearers who carried Kirk’s coffin during a private ceremony.

In a heartfelt tribute shared online after the political activist's death, Vance recalled Kirk’s constant support, writing, “Charlie was constantly calling and texting, checking on our family and offering guidance and prayers. After every event, he would give me a big hug, tell me he was praying for me, and ask me what he could do.”
