Pregnant woman and 2 children among 8 shot dead at Pennsylvania home
ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA: A pregnant woman and two children were among nine people killed in a deadly shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, before the suspected gunman barricaded himself inside a home and a SWAT standoff ended with his death. Police described the scene as one of the most heartbreaking they had encountered in their careers.
The shootings took place on Friday evening, October 9, in the 700 block of Perry Street. Frightened residents called 911 after hearing gunfire and seeing a man firing a handgun outside a home, prompting an emergency response from local police.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the deaths as devastating and deeply disturbing.
Pregnant woman and two children among victims in Erie shooting
The deaths have left Erie facing what local officials described as a terrible tragedy. Among those killed were a pregnant woman and two children, adding to the devastating toll of the shooting.
According to reports, police officers arriving at the scene initially found two women lying dead in the street. One of the women was pregnant. The shooting took place in the 700 block of Perry Street, around 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
The suspected gunman reportedly opened fire with a handgun outside a home before barricading himself inside.
The incident ended with nine people dead, including the suspected shooter, who was later found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the victims.
It also remains unclear whether the victims were related to one another, whether they knew the suspected gunman or what happened before the shooting began.
The lack of information about the victims has left important questions unanswered as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah spoke about the impact of the incident on the officers who responded to the scene, describing it as an especially difficult experience for those involved in the investigation. “This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered,” Lorah said, according to WABC-TV.
Erie police respond to SWAT standoff after deadly shooting
After the initial shootings, Erie Police Department officers and members of its SWAT team surrounded the home where the suspected gunman had barricaded himself.
According to the City of Erie, all the deaths occurred before officers arrived at the scene. Police repeatedly ordered the person inside the home to surrender, but they apparently received no response.
During the standoff, additional loud sounds were heard, initially raising concerns that more gunfire was being exchanged and that other people could still be in danger.
Authorities later clarified that the sounds were actually caused by police flash-bangs, which had been used during the confrontation. Officers entered the home after obtaining a search warrant.
Officials said officers had responded promptly to the incident, arriving within minutes of receiving a ShotSpotter alert. The technology had alerted authorities to the gunfire, helping prompt the police response.
Despite the rapid response, the killings had already taken place by the time officers arrived, according to the city's statement.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah calls shooting one of the city's most devastating scenes
Lorah said the scale of the deaths had deeply affected those responding to the incident. Reflecting on his nearly three decades in law enforcement, he said he had never encountered a scene quite like it.
“I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years” working in law enforcement, Lorah said. He also questioned whether the city had ever experienced such a devastating loss of life.
