Prince Harry's 'nervous' gestures from solo NYC outing hints at sadness, says body language expert
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Prince Harry appeared noticeably anxious and emotional as he kicked off a series of solo engagements in New York City, according to an expert.
The Duke of Sussex attended a summit to address the global mental health crisis impacting young people, a cause that deeply resonates with him due to its connection to his late mother, Princess Diana.
Prince Harry speaks about mental health at 2024 Concordia Summit
The 2024 Concordia Summit saw Prince Harry advocating for young people to have a seat at the policy-making table.
Speaking on behalf of the Diana Award, he warned that "the next generation’s future is in danger of being stolen if their advice is not listened to," urging governments to actively involve young voices in decision-making processes.
While the content of Harry's message was powerful, his demeanor suggested an underlying tension.
Body language expert Judi James pointed out that Harry's behavior was markedly different from his usual confident persona.
"Maybe it is the poignant, close-to-his-heart subject matter of mental health and his mother Diana here," told James to The Mirror, noting that his appearance was "a world away" from the relaxed and lively Harry seen at a recent charity event hosted by actor Kevin Costner.
Prince Harry's body language shows signs of anxiety and sadness
Judi James observed a series of "anxiety rituals" as Prince Harry participated in the panel discussion. His unsmiling expression and reddened face apparently hinted at an emotional undercurrent.
"He sucks his lips in and his eye expression suggests sadness before finally frowning and staring ahead in concentration," observed the body language expert.
Throughout the event, he repeatedly adjusted his suit and tie, fidgeted in his seat, and rubbed his knees—actions James interpreted as signs of discomfort.
She explained, "His hands rub his knees in a self-comfort ritual and he performs a couple of knee-judders, like a small dance of the feet."
James also noted that Harry's gestures, such as cracking his knuckles and rubbing his thumbs together, reflected an attempt to soothe his nerves. At one point, he was seen rubbing his thumbs on his mouth, which the expert described as suggesting "reflection as well as some nervousness."
The event marked the beginning of Harry's series of appearances in New York, where he is set to continue his philanthropic work during UN General Assembly High-Level Week and Climate Week.
