NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: House Speaker Mike Johnson called upon President Joe Biden on Monday, April 29 to persuade the International Criminal Court (ICC) to not issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials in the country.

According to Fox News, Johnson asked Biden to utilize the influence of the United States on the global stage to that end, claiming that the impending warrants would be "baseless and illegitimate," as well as harmful to the US national security.

Speaker Mike Johnson's statement

Warning against the potential setbacks of the warrants against Israeli leaders, Johnson stated, "If unchallenged by the Biden administration, the ICC could create and assume unprecedented power to issue arrest warrants against American political leaders, American diplomats, and American military personnel, thereby endangering our country's sovereign authority."

"Instead of wrongly targeting Israel, the ICC should pursue charges against Iran and its terror proxies, including Hamas, for engaging in horrific war crimes. The Biden administration must immediately and unequivocally demand that the ICC stand down and the U.S. should use every available tool to prevent such an abomination," he added.

State Department deputy spokesman Vidant Patel did not acknowledge the reported plans of ICC during Monday's press briefing, instead telling reporters, "On this investigation, our position is clear. We continue to believe that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over the Palestinian situation."

Israel's concerns with ICC

The New York Times reported that Israeli officials are worried that the ICC is preparing arrest warrants over Israel's response to the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, which has been criticized globally for its severity.

While the country is not a member of the ICC, similar to its ally US, the Palestinian territories were admitted in April 2015.

In a statement shared over social media, Netanyahu said, "Under my leadership, Israel will never accept any attempt by the ICC to undermine its inherent right of self-defense. The threat to seize the soldiers and officials of the Middle East’s only democracy and the world’s only Jewish state is outrageous. We will not bow to it."

"While the ICC will not affect Israel’s actions, it would set a dangerous precedent that threatens the soldiers and officials of all democracies fighting savage terrorism and wanton aggression."

Internet reacts to Mike Johnson's request

"Biden won't do anything, he is catering to protesters for votes," a user wrote on the social media platform X, in response to the Speaker's request to POTUS.

"The Art of the Irrelevance of the ICC is perfected in Washington and about to implement against popular opinion," stated another.

"The international Court has zero authority," slammed a third.

"ICC is a corrupt organization and needs to be abolished," claimed a fourth user.

"Isn't this a way for Biden to blackmail Netanyahu? I'm just saying!!" exclaimed a fifth user.

"It's a Puppet Western Court that issued arrest warrants for President Putin. Surely the Puppet Masters in the White House can rein them in?" commented a sixth.
