Queen Elizabeth II chided Meghan Markle for her behavior at event before royal wedding, claims insider
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, was reportedly reprimanded by Queen Elizabeth II over an incident that took place during a food-tasting event ahead of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, as reported by Mirror.
According to royal author Katie Nicholl, the late Queen was not happy with Meghan's behavior during the event at Windsor Castle.
Meghan Markle reportedly rebuked by Queen Elizabeth over food-tasting remark
The incident occurred when Meghan, while tasting dishes for her wedding, was reportedly "unimpressed" with the sampling dishes.
Meghan claimed she "could taste egg" in one of the prepared dishes. Despite being assured by the kitchen staff that there was no egg in the dish, Meghan reportedly insisted, saying, "No, I can taste it."
Katie Nicholl recounted that Queen Elizabeth II intervened during the tense moment. The Queen "quietly took Meghan to the side" and reminded her "the royal family does not speak to people like that".
This revelation comes amid another controversy involving Meghan Markle, stemming from her recent trip to Nigeria. Reports surfaced that Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, had criticized Meghan's attire during an event marking President Bola Tinubu's one year in office. However, the First Lady has since clarified that her comments were directed at young Nigerian women, not Meghan.
Tinubu's office told AFP Fact Check: "She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here. At no point did she say anything about Meghan's dressing."
Oluremi Tinubu's office and the TV station that broadcast the speech clarified the context of her remarks. The First Lady's comments, which were interpreted as a critique of Meghan's dress, were actually about the fashion choices of young Nigerian women.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of cultural identity and modesty, urging young women to embrace Nigerian fashion rather than mimicking Western styles.
In her speech, Tinubu said: "The message here is we have to salvage our children. We see the way they dress. They keep forgetting that Nigeria, we are beautiful. You can see what they showcase on the stage, I said, 'We are fashionable, we see what is going on'. We are not having the Met Gala. And everyone, the nakedness, is just everywhere and the men are well-clothed. So we have to do something. Tell them we don't accept nakedness in our culture. That is not beautiful. It's not beautiful at all."
She added, "And they're all beautiful girls, but they should be confident in who they are. They do not want to mimic and try to emulate film stars from America. They don't know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are. Don't lose who you are."
Prince William miffed with comparisons between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana
Prince William is reportedly upset over comparisons between Meghan Markle and his late mother, Princess Diana, that surfaced during Meghan and Prince Harry's recent trip to Nigeria. The comparisons have focused on Meghan's fashion choices and jewelry, with some likening her style to Diana's during her 1990 visit to the same country with now-King Charles.
Meghan was seen wearing a simple gold necklace similar to one Diana wore, and a diamond cross necklace purportedly once owned by Diana. However, a source close to Diana's legacy noted that they "didn't recognize [the necklace] at all," casting doubt on the authenticity of the comparison.
According to an insider, William finds the comparisons "beyond tasteless and offensive." He is particularly troubled by the notion of Meghan being portrayed as a modern-day Diana, seeing it as disrespectful to both his mother and his wife, Kate Middleton.
The source also revealed that William feels sidelined by Harry's decisions regarding these tributes to Diana, as he was not consulted about the trips or future plans to honor their mother. This has added to the existing tension between the brothers.
