Retired judge J Michael Luttig endorses Harris, reveals why he will 'unhesitatingly' vote for Democrats

WASHINGTON, DC: Retired federal appeals court Judge J Michael Luttig, a well-known conservative legal scholar, has announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris over former president Donald Trump.

Luttig, who was appointed to the bench by President George HW Bush, described Trump's candidacy as an existential threat to American democracy.

This marks the first time Luttig, who has served under two Republican administrations, will be voting for a Democrat.

J Michael Luttig's decision to support Kamala Harris is rooted in his deep concern for the state of American democracy.

“In the presidential election of 2024 there is only one political party and one candidate for the presidency that can claim the mantle of defender and protector of America’s Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law," Luttig said in a statement to CNN.

“As a result, I will unhesitatingly vote for the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Presidency of the United States, Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris," he added in the statement. 

Luttig told the publicaton that his decision to publicly back Harris was a matter of knowing “right from wrong” – and acting in accordance.

J Michael Luttig has also served as been an assistant counsel to the former president Ronald Reagan before he was appointed to the federal bench by George HW Bush from 1981 to 1982.

He has srerved US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for 15 years from 1991 to 2006.

He was also a counselor and senior advisor to the Boeing Company CEO and board of directors. He also served as the executive vice president and general counsel of Boeing from 2006 to 2020. according to the Constitution center. 

His falling from Trump can be traced back to 2020 when he became became widely recognized for playing a crucial role in convincing then-vice president Mike Pence to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

At the request of Pence's attorney, Luttig drafted a series of tweets that laid out the legal reasoning for Pence to reject Trump’s attempts to overturn Joe Biden’s victory, CNN noted. 

“Because of the former president’s continued, knowingly false claims that he won the 2020 election, millions of Americans no longer have faith and confidence in our national elections, and many never will again,” Luttig wrote in the statement. 

Luting also suggested both the Republican party and Trump have launched "the war on America’s Democracy.”

“The time for America’s choosing has come,” Luttig wrote, adding “It is time for all Americans to stand and affirm whether they believe in American Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law, and want for America the same – or whether they do not.”

Some pointed out the impact of Luttig's endorsement on the Republican Party, with one commenting, "This is destroying Republicans. Kamala has received more Republican endorsements than all other Democratic candidates combined."
