DES MOINES, IOWA: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sparked a new outcry as he accused former President Donald Trump of not being pro-life.

The 45-year-old GOP frontrunner was addressing an audience at a CNN town hall in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday, January 4 when he stated that Trump has “flip-flopped” on abortion and will seek to “override” state-level bans on the procedure if elected to a second term.

“I think for pro-life voters in Iowa, Donald Trump is taking positions that are way different than what he professed to believe when he first ran for president in 2016,” DeSantis claimed.

During the forum, moderator Kaitlan Collins asked, “Do you think Donald Trump is not pro-life?” The White House hopeful replied, “Of course not.”

“I mean, when you’re saying that pro-life protections are a terrible thing, by definition, you are not pro-life,” DeSantis continued, according to the NY Post.

“When you say that you want to have a federal law at 18 weeks or 20 weeks that would override a state like Iowa that has enacted pro-life protections — that would mean more abortions, not fewer abortions,” he added.

Why DeSantis thinks Trump is not pro-life

DeSantis attacked Trump, referring to remarks he made on 'Meet the Press' with NBC last year in which he described his choice to sign a ban on abortions after six weeks as a "terrible thing."

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake. But we’ll come up with a number, but at the same time, Democrats won’t be able to go out at six months, seven months, eight months and allow an abortion,” Trump told 'Meet the Press' moderator Kristen Welker when he was asked if he would support a five- or six-week abortion ban.

DeSantis continued to criticize Trump for his "flip-flop" on the topic of abortion rights after he spoke at the 2020 March for Life demonstration in Washington, DC, advocating for safeguards for unborn children.

“I don’t know if it’s because of political convenience or this is what he always believed in, but here’s the thing, some issues are pretty fundamental. How do you flip-flop on something like the sanctity of life?” DeSantis said.

Republican candidates have struggled with the abortion issue ever since the Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade last year. The problem has persisted in inspiring Democratic base turnout and influencing independent and Republican voters as well.

Internet slams DeSantis

After DeSantis’ remarks surfaced on social media, many users slammed him for accusing Trump of not being pro-life. “DeSantis is a joke,” one user said.

“DeSantis crapped all over his chances of anyone ever trusting him again,” a second user slammed. “The border the border the border the border. Who f***ing cares about abortion. Leave it alone or lose again,” a third said.

“I'm pro-choice up to 15 weeks and apparently Ron is too,” a fourth mocked while another wrote, “We'll be somebody"? Is Casey backstage with a remote control?”

“This is the same guy who banned books like the old inquisition .. yet here we are exposing him for being a poser :) he also went after Disney on a personal vendetta,” someone else stated.
