MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY: Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie sparked a fresh backlash as he claimed that he was ‘wrong’ to endorse former President Donald Trump during the 2016 White House race.

“I have an admission to make,” Christie said looking directly at the camera in the new 66-second digital ad rolled out on Thursday, January 4.

“Eight years ago, when I decided to endorse Donald Trump for president, I did it because he was winning, and I did it because I thought I could make him a better candidate and a better president,” he stated, adding “Well, I was wrong. I made a mistake.”

The 61-year-old GOP front-runner famously threw his support behind Trump after withdrawing from the GOP contest eight years ago following his sixth-place finish in the New Hampshire primary, according to NY Post.

Christie even assisted Trump in preparing for debates with Democrats Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton in both the 2016 and 2020 elections.

He did more for Trump than just back him; he aggressively campaigned for the 77-year-old, stood up for him repeatedly in the face of controversy, and openly pursued the position of attorney general or vice president

Now, however, the New Jerseyan is redefining himself as a repentant opponent of the 45th president, calling him “self-centered” and a “loser.” He said last week that Trump would “burn America to the ground.”

He also criticized his fellow Republicans, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, for not going after Trump head-on.

Chris Christie warns voters in a new ad

Citing the former president's sizable lead in the Republican primary polls, Christie cautioned voters in the new ad that they are “confronted with the very same choice again.”

“Everyone says, ‘Anyone who’s behind him should drop out, and we should make our choice Donald Trump versus Joe Biden,’ Christie said.

“Well, Joe Biden has had the wrong policies, and Donald Trump would sell the soul of this country. Neither choice is acceptable to me, and it shouldn’t be acceptable to you,” he continued.

"I Have An Admission To Make," Christie's latest advertisement, is a part of his campaign's recent seven-figure ad buy in New Hampshire, a crucial early stage in the 2024 contest.

Despite calls to withdraw from the Republican primary because his campaign could benefit the former president, Christie made it clear in an ad from last year that he would not be changing. He claimed to be the only candidate prepared to speak the truth about Trump.

Internet reacts to Chris Christie’s remarks

After Christie’s ad surfaced on social media, many users slammed him for claiming that he was ‘wrong’ to endorse former President Donald Trump during the 2016 White House race.

“And you made the same mistake in 2020,” one user said. “Why is this still a thing? Christie should have closed this terrible idea down months ago... He's just stinking up the room at this point,” another user attacked.

“Sleazeball. This dude is in last place, and his entire campaign is based on trashing the front runner,” one user slammed while another one wrote, “If Trump is the nominee, I guarantee both Christie and Haley will back him and vote for him.”

“He betrayed everyone and made a dangerous change in American politics in general and the GOP in particular. He made politicians chase after money and investment and not care about the risks facing the country. His place is only in prison,” a user blasted.

Another user stated, “He conveniently ignored he was on board with Trump 2020 also. Christie has no character or integrity. This is not sincere. This is a PR rehab tour.”
