During a heartfelt conversation with Jay Shetty on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty' podcast, the 26-year-old singer shared how he managed to preserve his personal life amidst the media frenzy and millions of public opinions.

When discussing his breakup with fellow singer Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, described the experience as "brutal."

"I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private lives," Mendes explained.

"It's so hard not to be swayed by it... no matter how strong mentally you are," he added.

Emphasizing how complicated and nuanced love is, especially under the scrutiny of the public eye, the 'Stitches' singer noted that love has its moments of confusion.

"This is real life. This is real love, and love is confusing and hard... goes through dips, goes through pauses, goes through breaks, goes through so much," said Mendes.

Expressing empathy for anyone navigating love and relationships, especially when they're under constant public scrutiny, the songwriter shared, "I just feel like as a celebrity, I want to be really truthful from the place of, this is what love is like for me."

"I would say, ‘I felt this way when I was doing this interview and I said this thing... I'm sorry if it came off like that. I love you.’ It immediately cuts through any type of assumption," said Mendes.

Although Mendes and Cabello ended their relationship in 2023, they have managed to maintain a close friendship.

The 'Treat You Better' singer revealed that they still keep in touch regularly, saying, "I'll be the first to text her. She'll be the first to text me."

For Mendes and Cabello, maintaining a healthy connection was about blocking out the "noise" from the public and focusing on their bond.

"As long as we're good, we're good. All the noise is just noise, and that's been a huge part of it," Mendes admitted, according to OK Magazine.
