NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: On August 8, Shawn Mendes celebrated his birthday with a sensational musical double feature, but it's the surprising new revelation about being a father in his lyrics that's really got fans talking.

The Canadian heartthrob treated his followers to not one, but two fresh tracks from his highly anticipated fifth album 'Shawn': 'Why Why Why' and 'Isn't That Enough.'

Shawn Mendes describes 'Why Why Why' as 'anthemic'

'Why Why Why' comes with a visually stunning new video, capturing Mendes in intimate settings - a rustic barn, a serene riverbank, and a solitary dark stage.

Directed by Anthony Wilson and Connor Brashier, the video complements Mendes' reflective lyrics, which delve into the bittersweet memories of a past romance and the cyclical nature of life.

Reportedly, Shawn Mendes has released 7 albums and 1 EP over the course of his career so far, namely, 'Handwritten' (2015), 'Illuminate' (2016), 'Shawn Mendes' (2018), 'Wonder' (2020).

He has also released an eponymous EP in 2014 and two live albums: 'MTV Unplugged' (2017) and 'Shawn Mendes: Live at Madison Square Garden' (2016).



 

Mendes' song's opening verse read, “Visions of her naked in my head/But I went off and chose myself instead,” while later in the song, he reveals: “I thought I was about to be a father/Shook me to the core I’m still a kid/Sometimes, I still cry out for my mother.”

According to Rolling Stones, in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Mendes opened up about the evocative nature of his new track "Why Why Why,' describing the lyrics as "anthemic."

He also noted that they carried a sense of powerful emotion and beauty, further remarking, “It almost felt like a cry. It felt like… I don’t know. It just felt powerful and beautiful.”

He also said that “Isn’t That Enough” felt like “I had a conversation with the fans and with the public.” He explained, “I needed to address that, ‘Hey, how have you been?’ And I needed to say back, ‘I’m good. Everything’s good. It’s going to be good. It’s all right.'”

Shawn Mendes' new album is 'the most natural thing' since 'Senorita'

The singer-songwriter is back with the musical bang nearly three years after his high-profile split with Camila Cabello.

Officially confirming their relationship In July 2019 with the release of their hit single 'Senorita' (that topped the Billboard Hot 100) and its steamy music video.

In November 2021, after two years together, Mendes and Cabello announced their split in matching Instagram posts, stating they would remain friends.

Mendes recently shared that this album feels like his most authentic work yet, describing the creative process as “the most natural thing I’ve ever made,”

He also noted that it’s both effortless and deeply rewarding.

The singer said, “It feels like the most natural thing to talk about and play live,” he explained, highlighting the ease and joy the music brings him.

Set to release on October 18, 'Shawn' will be celebrated with a special six-show tour.

Mendes is set to perform the album in its entirety at iconic venues including Bearsville Theater in Woodstock and Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London, with stops in Nashville, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

The tour reportedly promises an intimate and immersive experience for fans as Mendes takes them through his latest musical journey.

Mendes last performed on April 6, 2024, at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This concert was part of his return to the stage after a hiatus due to mental health concerns.

Mendes is set to headline Rock in Rio in Brazil on September 22, 2024, marking his first solo concert since he canceled the remainder of his Wonder Tour in 2022 to focus on his mental health.
