WASHINGTON, DC: Actress and comedian Whitney Cummings ignited a firestorm online after posting a viral tweet suggesting that Charlie Kirk’s killer should have carried out the act "privately" rather than in front of children. Her remark quickly drew intense backlash, with social media users ridiculing what many saw as a bizarre and tone-deaf response to a public tragedy.

The controversy unfolded just days after 31-year-old conservative activist Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Police have since arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the shooting.

On September 12, Whitney Cummings sparked outrage on X (formerly Twitter) when she told her 1.4 million followers, “The person who killed Charlie Kirk could have done it privately but chose to do it publicly in front of kids.” She ended the post with, “If you are happy about this you’re also pro child trauma.”

The tweet quickly went viral, drawing 3.6 million views and hundreds of comments. While Cummings appeared to criticize those celebrating Kirk’s death, her wording struck many as bizarre, confusing, and poorly thought out. By suggesting the murder could have been carried out “privately,” she appeared to imply that there was a more acceptable way to commit such a violent act, an idea many found absurd and tone-deaf.

Critics accused her of minimizing the seriousness of the killing and focusing on an irrelevant hypothetical. The lack of clarity in her message united voices across the political spectrum, with both liberals and conservatives mocking or rejecting the statement for its strange framing and unintended implications.

Whitney Cummings’ viral tweet triggered a flood of equally viral responses, many mocking the strange logic behind her statement.

One user asked, “You mean like they could’ve set up an intimate assassination appointment?” What are you talking about, you f*****g dingbat? I hate how goddamn stupid everyone is now!"

A commenter added, "Charlie Kirk could have been murdered privately” has been taking me out all morning. Girl what?”

Sarcasm and disbelief continued to pour in. “Charlie kirk should have been killed in private instead” is the sensible middle ground take we’ve needed,” one user joked.

Others expressed confusion and discomfort. “I guess this is meant to be a joke...? No disrespect, I have nothing against Whitney, but this one feels weird,” one commenter said. “And it's not 'don't make fun of tragedy', it just doesn't land for me at all."

More users criticized the tone and content of the tweet. “Fairly strange angle to take,” one wrote.

Another added, “This is a really weird tweet, girl.”

Someone else tweeted, “This is the dumbest comment I’ve seen all day and Nancy Mace said stuff..”

The criticism grew sharper and more emotional. “So many words to choose and you wrote this stupid s**t,” one user said bluntly.

Another lashed out, writing, “Wow! This is the most heartless s**t statement. You claim you’re not a leftist anymore and you say this s**t ? It’s ok they killed him, just don’t traumatize the kids? F**K YOU WHITNEY.”

One final user summed up the backlash, “Basically what you’re saying is you’re fine with the murder if he had done it privately? You’re crazier than your f*****g dingbat sister.”
