Whitney Cummings reveals how Drew Barrymore helped her 'snap' out of her postpartum depression
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Whitney Cummings is reflecting on how Drew Barrymore supported her during a difficult period in her life.
During an appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show' on Thursday, January 16, Cummings shared how Barrymore played an important role in helping her through postpartum depression.
Whitney Cummings says she was in 'deep throes' of postpartum depression
Cummings shared that her postpartum depression had left her feeling overwhelmed, but participating in 'Hollywood Squares' helped her break free from those emotions.
“I was in deep throes of postpartum depression,” Cummings said, explaining that being part of the show “snapped me out of it” and “really helped me a lot.”
She also credited Barrymore’s presence on the show for making her feel comfortable.
“I needed to see other moms, like working and having fun, and that was a big healing moment for me,” Cummings said per People
Reflecting on the experience, she added, “I think I was just putting so much pressure on myself, and that really helped me just release it.”
Drew Barrymore helped Whitney Cummings feel 'safe'
Cummings expressed gratitude for Drew Barrymore’s support, saying that her presence on the show made her feel secure.
“I knew that even if I did suck, we'd make it funny and we'd figure it out,” Cummings shared.
“Then, I was safe enough to be able to just feel like, ‘You can do this, and if you can't do this, that's also fine,’” she said.
Cummings realized that much of her struggle came from the pressure she was placing on herself.
“I realized how much I defined myself through my ability to make people laugh or be smart or say the thing in the moment,” she admitted, adding, “My brain was not working. I was so scared.”
Drew Barrymore shares her own postpartum experience
Barrymore, who is a mother to daughters Olive and Frankie with her ex-husband Will Kopelman, opened up about her own postpartum challenges.
“I felt so confused in the most profound and beautiful ways after I had my kids,” Barrymore said, adding, “I didn’t know who I was supposed to be, and so I didn’t know how to work..."
Barrymore also shared that she first dealt with postpartum depression after welcoming her younger daughter, Frankie, in 2014.
“It was just really challenging, and I felt overwhelmed,” she said in a 2015 interview with People. “I made a lot of decisions, and I definitely changed my work life to suit my parenthood.”
