Taylor Swift impact: Minneapolis middle school students learn life lessons from popstar’s career and songs
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Pop sensation Taylor Swift's impact amongst children and GenZ is surging. According to Fox 9, students at Anderson United Middle School in Minneapolis are learning feminism and other issues through Swift's songs.
Students usually focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic. But now they are learning the ABCs of Taylor Swift.
What did students from United Middle School say?
Wren Hopes, a sixth grade student, said, "I'm a really, really big Swiftie. Yeah. It's scary. She's really positive, and she's just really cool, and her music is awesome."
The Anderson After School Beacons is honoringg the superstar's practice of re-recording her old albums to regain possession of her music by holding a class called 'Taylor's Version' every Wednesday.
There, via an examination of Swift's discography and career, sixth through eighth grade students are taught both academic and life principles.
"I think it's really important to try to meet students with where they're at. So I really think that Taylor is a vehicle for us to connect to students and then also connect to what we're learning at school" said teacher Seth Wester.
Students in this class are examining issues of feminism and double standards in one of Swift's music videos in honor of Women's History Month.
Fox News cites that by creating a graphic timeline of all of Swift's albums and crafting friendship bracelets which became popular for fans to trade during her most recent Eras tour, Swifties have also learnt about biographies and the creative arts.
Students see Taylor Swift as their role model
Wester said, "So we're always trying to tie in, some kind of either historical, social, emotional learning. We might in the future actually do a little math lesson about how much money Taylor has earned and business."
The students see Swift as a role model who uses her art to express herself and her success bringing people together is a subject they know all too well.
"I didn't know there were this many Swifties at this school," said Hopes.
The report also added that a journaling class looking at Swift's lyrics started at Lake Harriet Upper School on Tuesday, March 12 and a fan club class will be offered at Kenwood Elementary this summer.
