'Tell the truth!' Passerby brutally crashes CNN reporter's White House rant on live camera

WASHINGTON, DC: CNN’s most memorable moment on Saturday, September 19, outside the White House did not come from a correspondent or a politician.

It came from someone simply walking past.

As reporter Betsy Klein was forced to deliver her live update from the pavement after the White House press ban, an unidentified man suddenly made his opinion known. 

Klein continued with the broadcast, but his remarks were picked up by the microphone, giving the tense White House media standoff an unexpected turn.

Man trolls CNN reporter on-air

Klein was in the middle of a live rant about being locked out of the White House when a passerby decided to answer back.

The man walked past the CNN camera and fired off a message that landed directly in the middle of her broadcast: “Tell the truth! If you tell the truth, then you won’t get revoked. Tell the truth.”

Klein kept going, but there was no missing what had just happened. The man had effectively turned her own live broadcast into his opportunity to call her out.

The timing was particularly pointed. 

CNN was forced to report from the sidewalk after its reporters were denied entry to the White House and their press credentials were confiscated.

Klein was explaining the situation to viewers when the passerby’s blunt criticism came through loud and clear.

White House shuts out 'fake news'

The unusual moment followed Trump’s decision to restrict White House access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

Trump announced the move on Friday, accusing the three organizations of what he described as “fake news” and criticizing their coverage of his administration.

The White House then began enforcing the restrictions on Saturday, with journalists from the affected outlets being denied entry.

Klein was among those affected. She said her White House press credentials were deactivated.

MS NOW’s Akayla Gardner and Politico’s Cheyenne Haslett were also among the reporters who were turned away, with credentials reportedly confiscated or disabled.

The networks have pushed back against the restrictions and said the decision would not stop them from reporting on the administration.

Obama-era Fox News dispute recalled

The fight has also revived an older argument over presidential access and the press.

The Obama administration faced criticism in 2009 after officials attempted to keep Fox News out of a press pool interview involving then-pay czar Kenneth Feinberg. 

Other networks objected to Fox being excluded and declined to participate unless the network was allowed into the interview.

The proposed exclusion ultimately did not go ahead.

A separate dispute emerged during Obama’s presidency over White House photography in 2013.

News organizations objected to restrictions affecting independent photographers and raised concerns about the administration supplying its own official images instead of allowing independent visual journalists to document presidential events.
