WEST BLOOMFIELD, MICHIGAN: Police in West Bloomfield Township in Michigan launched an emergency response after a vehicle crashed into the building of Temple Israel synagogue on Thursday, March 12, triggering what has been described as an active shooter situation.

A video that shows smoke after the vehicle crashed into the temple has gone viral on social media.

Footage circulating online appears to capture the chaotic aftermath of the crash, showing thick smoke rising near the synagogue complex while emergency crews responded.

The smoke is believed to have come from the vehicle involved in the crash, which witnesses say caught fire after striking the building.

Authorities are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what may have led up to the crash.

Temple Israel is a major synagogue serving the local Jewish community and its campus includes worship spaces, educational facilities, and a preschool.



The Oakland County Sheriff's Office confirmed that officers from several agencies were deployed to secure the property while emergency crews worked to clear the building.

In response to the situation, the Jewish Federation of Detroit advised Jewish institutions in the region to implement temporary lockout procedures while authorities handled the incident.

FBI Director Kash Patel has posted on X writing 'FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation out of Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.'



Officials urge residents to avoid the area

According to authorities, the incident took place at the synagogue campus on Walnut Lake Road, near the Drake Road intersection.

Investigators believe the vehicle was deliberately driven into the structure before it caught fire, prompting multiple law enforcement and emergency units to rush to the scene.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether anyone inside the building was harmed as the investigation remains ongoing.

Law enforcement agencies urged residents to stay clear of the area to allow emergency responders to work safely.



The Michigan State Police said troopers were increasing patrols around other places of worship as a precaution while the situation was being handled.

Meanwhile, the Ann Arbor Police Department reportedly said it was aware of the reports and monitoring developments as a precautionary measure.

Temple Israel, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield Township, is one of the largest Jewish congregations in the suburban Detroit region.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the driver or the circumstances behind the crash as the investigation continues.
