The Daily Show host Jon Stewart feuds with Elon Musk, calls him 'extremely skilled propagandist'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A public spat has broken out between Jon Stewart and Elon Musk, with the late-night host directly calling the tech billionaire an “extremely skilled propagandist.”
The exchange, which unfolded on X on Friday, March 20, came after Musk took offense to Stewart’s recent remarks about his influence over online discourse turning what began as criticism into a full-blown back-and-forth.

Elon Musk takes a jibe, Jon Stewart fires back
The friction started when Musk reacted to a clip of Stewart discussing him on a podcast. Dismissing the comedian’s critique, Musk wrote “Jon Stewart is an extremely skilled propagandist disguised as a truth-teller.”
He followed it up with another post with a softer tone, adding that Stewart is “a great comedian too.”
But Stewart didn’t ignore the dig. Instead, he flipped it right back saying “Elon Musk is an extremely skilled propagandist.”
That prompted Musk to respond again, keeping the exchange going: “Not as good as you! Stop being so humble.”

Rather than letting the argument stay confined to social media, Stewart escalated it with a familiar move, an open invitation for Elon Musk to come for a face-to-face interview.
“Come on the show!! We’ll talk about how self-deprecating we both are!!”, wrote Stewart.

Elon Musk Vs Jon Stewart: an old feud
At the core of the disagreement is Stewart’s argument about Musk's influence over X.
Speaking alongside media researcher Renee DiResta and journalist Casey Newton, he suggested that the real concern isn’t isolated voting irregularities, but the massive reach Musk commands through X.
Stewart pointed out how Musk’s posts often dominate users’ feeds, even when they don’t actively follow or engage with him arguing that this kind of amplification shapes public perception in a far more powerful way.
In that context, Stewart framed Musk’s warnings about voter fraud as misplaced focus compared to the broader impact of platform control.
Stewart has repeatedly tried to bring Musk onto 'The Daily Show' for a direct conversation.
The current exchange isn’t a new territory for the two. In a previous exchange triggered after Stewart targeted DOGE initiative, Musk had indicated he might agree to appear so long as the interview aired unedited.
The show quickly agreed to that condition. Yet the potential sit-down never materialized.
Musk later questioned Stewart’s neutrality, suggesting he was too partisan to host a fair discussion.
Stewart, in turn, used his platform to mock that reasoning while reiterating the offer.
