BRONX, NEW YORK: Vincent Pastore, best known for playing Salvatore Bonpensiero in HBO’s 'The Sopranos' and for portraying mobsters across film and television, has died at the age of 80, according to reports.

He was found dead on Saturday, August 1, at his home on City Island in the Bronx by a neighbor. His longtime manager and several cast members also paid tribute, remembering Pastore's career and the person behind his iconic roles.

Manager Robert Attermann remembers Vincent Pastore

His manager, Robert Attermann, mourned the actor’s death in a statement, reflecting on more than three decades of working together. “I had the privilege of representing Vinny for more than 30 years, long before ‘The Sopranos’ made him a household name,” he said.

He continued, “To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable, but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more.”

Calling Pastore “one of the kindest, most generous people” he had ever known, Attermann said the actor treated everyone with warmth and respect and never turned down a fan seeking a photograph or autograph.

He added that Pastore genuinely appreciated those who supported him and always made them feel valued. Attermann also described him as deeply passionate about acting, noting that he was always encouraging and generous with young actors, offering guidance and support whenever he could.

Describing the loss as “deeply personal,” Attermann reflected on watching both Pastore’s remarkable career and the person he became over more than 30 years. “I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humor, and his heart,” he wrote before extending condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and fans.

Born in the Bronx in 1946, Pastore served in the Vietnam War before earning a drama degree from Pace University. He later built a successful acting career with small roles in films including 'Goodfellas' (1990) and 'Carlito’s Way' (1993) before landing a prominent role in HBO’s 'Gotti' in 1996.

He also appeared in 'One Life to Live' and made multiple guest appearances on 'Law & Order.' His most recent screen work included appearing as himself in 'The Curse' in 2024 and lending his voice to 'Yellowjackets' in 2025.

Vincent Pastore reflected on iconic acting career

He remained most closely associated with 'The Sopranos,' where he appeared as a main cast member during the first two seasons, had a recurring role in Season 3, and returned as a guest in the final two seasons.

Although Pastore became known for portraying mobsters, he once explained that his upbringing was very different from the characters he played. “A lot of people think I grew up with those kinds of people,” he told Edge magazine, adding, “The truth is that I grew up in a pure Italian-American home. Tradition.”

He recalled growing up in New Rochelle in an Italian neighborhood, saying, “I can still smell the pizza! Roller skating every Friday night at the Boys Club. Great memories.”

While acknowledging that he saw bookies and loan sharks, he added that creating those characters came from using his own personality, concluding, “And for the record, I never knew any rats.”

The actor also credited HBO’s 'Gotti' as the turning point in his career. “When I could walk down the street, people would say, ‘You were great as Quack Quack,'” he told CrypticRock in December 2024, referring to his portrayal of Angelo Ruggiero. “That was the turning point in my career.”

Following news of his death, several 'The Sopranos' co-stars shared tributes. The actress who played Carmela Soprano said, “Vinnie was always so full of life.” Lorraine Bracco wrote on her Instagram Stories, “Such a funny & charming man…just a beautiful soul,” calling his death “absolutely heartbreaking.”
