WASHINGTON, DC: Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson of North Carolina has clinched the Republican nomination for governor in what is expected to be one of the toughest gubernatorial races across the nation come November.

In the nomination race, he emerged victorious over trial lawyer Bill Graham and state treasurer Dale Folwell. Come November, Robinson will go head-to-head against North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, who secured the Democratic nomination for governor.

If elected, both candidates would create state history. While Stein would be the state's first Jewish governor, Robinson would be the first Black governor of North Carolina.

At a Greensboro gathering on Saturday, former President Donald Trump offered his support for Robinson, referring to him as "Martin Luther King on steroids."

However, the divisive right-wing conservative firebrand has drawn criticism for his prior remarks on women, Muslims, Jews, and the LGBTQ community as well as for writing about ludicrous conspiracy theories.

Before announcing his candidacy for lieutenant governor in 2020, Robinson frequently made offensive statements on Facebook.

In one instance, he asserted that the Black Panther film was "crafted by an agnostic Jew and brought to the screen by satanic Marxists."

Robinson's remarks attacking the LGBTQ community have also drawn condemnation. He declared that homosexuality is "STILL an abominable sin" and that he would "NOT join" in "celebrating gay pride" following the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida. The shooting claimed the lives of 49 individuals and injured over 50 more.

It came to light during the 2020 lieutenant governor contest that Robinson had shared birther memes on Twitter and criticized former President Obama as a "worthless, anti-American atheist."

Additionally, he labeled Congresswoman Maxine Waters as an "ol maxi pad," referred to Michelle Obama as male, and described Joy Behar as a "she-beast."

In 2018, Robinson's comments on gun rights during a Greensboro city council meeting gained widespread attention, propelling his journey into politics. The following year, he submitted his candidacy for lieutenant governor, ultimately winning the election in 2020.

In addition to comparing Robinson MLK to Martin Luther King Jr, Trump also declared, "I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two."

North Carolina, a swing state, backed both Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, who is term-limited and set to take office in January, and President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

A user also posted, "I find it so hard to think there are Americans voting for these liars and haters and negative people that want to put fear into people only to promote themselves! It’s sickening!"
