WASHINGTON, DC: As part of a strategy devised over cognac in upscale New Jersey restaurants, Senator Bob Menendez claimed he saved the "a**" of a New Jersey insurance broker who bought his wife a new Mercedes in exchange for help in halting a state criminal investigation, as per the New York Post.

The Garden State Democrat boasted to Jose Uribe, "I saved your a**, not once but twice," during a dinner at the upscale Spanish restaurant Segovia in North Jersey in August 2020. Uribe provided this testimony at Menendez's federal court bribery trial in Manhattan on Monday, June 10.

The main prosecution witness stated that Menendez boasted about influencing state authorities in support of Uribe's associate Elvis Parra, who received a non-jail sentence after confessing to insurance fraud, and about obstructing another investigation that could have implicated Uribe's family.

Uribe testified, "He was proud and confident that he managed to get this done."

Furthermore, Uribe recounted numerous face-to-face encounters with the seasoned lawmaker, some of which resembled scenes from a crime movie. These meetings could be pivotal for the prosecution, especially as Menendez's attorneys have accused the senator's wife of marginalizing him and claiming credit for the payments.

As the witness described a meeting between Menendez and the senator in August 2019 at the white tablecloth Il Villaggio restaurant in Bergen County, she stated that Menendez "knew of the names" of persons Uribe wanted him to influence on behalf of.

Uribe testified that Menendez responded with, "We will look into it." After Uribe informed Menendez about the dinner at the Italian restaurant, Menendez shook his head and exchanged words with his lawyers. He testified that on September 5, 2019, he was subsequently invited to the Menendez couple's residence in Edgewater Cliffs.
