NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Actor Timothee Chalamet surprised his fans in New York City by making an unexpected appearance at his own lookalike contest on Sunday, October 27.

However, the event triggered chaos at Washington Square Park, resulting in one contestant being arrested by the NYPD, reported the Daily Mail.

Who organized the Timothee Chalamet lookalike contest?

The event was organized by YouTube personality Anthony Po, recognized for hosting similar contests. Promoted through social media, it garnered thousands of RSVPs, despite the winner receiving only $50 in prize money.

Doppelgangers of Chalamet showed up dressed as his iconic on-screen characters, including Willy Wonka and Paul Atreides from 'Dune'.

When the actor made his entrance surrounded by bodyguards, he posed for photos with the participants. Many fans at the event mistakenly focused their attention on the look-alikes, believing they were Chalamet himself.

The chaos at the contest

Just minutes into the competition, before the real Timothee Chalamet arrived, police reportedly instructed the large crowd to disperse and fined the organizers $500 for hosting an "unpermitted costume contest."

At least one participant was arrested and led away in handcuffs, although the NYPD did not provide an immediate reason for the action.

After Chalamet's arrival at the venue, the atmosphere became even more "insane," competitors told the Daily Mail, noting that the NYPD had to step in again to manage the starstruck crowd.

Competitor shares his own experience

Noah Wilde, a 23-year-old contestant in the lookalike contest, told the publication that the competition was decided by crowd vote, with attendees cheering for their favorite Timothee Chalamet doppelganger.

He recounted the incident that led to the NYPD's arrest, explaining that the police intervened to control the crowd after "they pushed one kid, and then they started yelling, like 'why the f**k would you push me,' and made a little circle. They ended up getting arrested."

Miles Mitchell, a college senior from Staten Island, was declared the winner by the audience. Dressed in a purple Willy Wonka outfit, he tossed candy from a briefcase to the crowd of admirers.

"Then the actual Timothee Chalamet showed up and gave (the winner) a hug. It was insane," said Wilde.
