GLENDALE, ARIZONA: Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona on September 21, 2025, sparked an unexpected debate after fireworks lit up the stage during the solemn tribute.

While some critics slammed the display as “inappropriate,” others praised it as a joyful celebration of Kirk’s life.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet has addressed the backlash, defending the decision as one that reflected Kirk’s spirit.

The service at State Farm Stadium featured sparklers as speakers walked onstage, a detail that quickly set social media alight.

One user posted a photo of the display, asking, “Why in God's name are there sparklers on stage at a funeral?” Another commented, “Why are there fireworks at the ‘memorial service’ for Charlie Kirk? This is a WWE script.”

Others criticized the theatrics, suggesting the organizers blurred the line between a tribute and a political rally. Memes comparing the event to staged entertainment also circulated widely on X, with some accusing Turning Point USA of “cheapening grief.”

TPUSA spokesperson defends fireworks as part of Charlie Kirk’s legacy

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for TPUSA and executive producer of 'The Charlie Kirk Show,' directly addressed the backlash on X.

Sharing one of the viral posts, he explained: “Because our staff loves the effect. They see it as one of our event signatures. And most importantly, Charlie loved it. We do not grieve the way the world grieves. We refuse to let the evil that killed Charlie rob us of our joy in remembering his incredible life and legacy.”

Kolvet framed the fireworks not as a gimmick, but as a deliberate choice to honor Kirk’s larger-than-life personality and the energy he brought to his movement.

Supporters hail fireworks at Charlie Kirk’s memorial as fitting tribute

While critics piled on, many supporters rallied to defend the tribute. One user wrote, “The fireworks are so beautiful and totally appropriate. The celebration and honoring in everything you do are clear. I love the standards of excellence in production by @TPUSA. You can really tell the difference even across the screen at home. Joy, honesty, depth, goodness, wholesomeness, peace, light in darkness. It all matters. Thank you Andrew and teams."

Another praised, “Beautiful answer Andrew. It was a perfect service from start to finish. Thank you all for stepping up even within your grief to arrange something so uplifting and God-filled. I’m sure Charlie was smiling as he watched. I’m confident God let him watch.”

Others framed the criticism itself as disrespectful. “Anyone who knew Charlie at all would never have asked this stupid question. Who do you think the Trump team got the idea to use these for his rallies? It was Charlie,” a commenter posted.

Another added, "If you knew Charlie, you’d know he loved the flares. It was his thing. His staff did everything he loved. It’s the way they honored him and it was perfect."

Some reactions went further, calling the moment uplifting: “It was a wonderful celebration of Charlie's life and a beautiful call to the lost for salvation.”

What happened at the memorial service

The State Farm Stadium memorial drew thousands, including President Donald Trump, who spoke in tribute.

As speakers took the stage, sparklers and fireworks illuminated the backdrop, turning the event into a high-energy spectacle. Organizers said the displays were meant to reflect Kirk’s spirit, blending solemn remembrance with celebration.

The service, one of the largest religious gatherings ever broadcast, combined traditional tributes with bold visual effects. For TPUSA, it was a statement that Kirk’s death should not silence his message but instead inspire renewed energy in his followers.
