Baltimore, Maryland: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited the site of Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on Tuesday, March 26, reported the Daily Mail.

Speaking with reporters at a news conference, he addressed the economic ramifications and supply chain issues that may arise as a result of the tragedy.

Pete Buttigieg hails first responders for 'extraordinary work'

Buttigieg began the conference by thanking the first responders "for their extraordinary and courageous work," whose "extreme professionalism" had "already saved lives."

"This is no ordinary bridge, this is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure," he noted, "It has been part of the skyline of this region longer than many of us have been alive."

For the local community, the "path to normalcy will not be easy, will not be quick, and will not be inexpensive," shared Buttigieg, reminding everyone that it was an "excruciating day" for many families.

"They are hoping and praying and we are hoping and praying with them. We are all putting our arms around the community of Baltimore."

He also praised Maryland Governor Wes Moore for his immediate response, stating, "He was already awake and hard at work when I reached him in the middle of the night."

"In many ways, our work is just beginning, to rebuild this bridge and deal with impacts in the meantime," said Buttigieg while vowing to investigate what caused a cargo ship to hit the bridge support in the early hours of the morning to result in the catastrophe.

Acknowledging that the closure of the port would cause ongoing problems with supply chains and transportation in the region, he shared, "I have no doubt that we will rebuild together and that Baltimore will come back stronger than ever before."

He further allayed public concern about the strength of bridges across the United States, claiming, "This is a unique circumstance. I do not know of a bridge that has been constructed to withstand a direct impact from a vessel of this size."

Internet digs up Pete Buttigieg's 2021 road racism theory

On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), users brought up Buttigieg's 2021 comments about "racist infrastructure" to troll him after his statements following the recent grave tragedy.

The account End Wokeness shared a clip of the Transport Secretary where he is heard saying, "If an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach — or that would have been — in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices."

"Don't worry, folks. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is focused on… solving racist bridges, roads, highways, and tunnels," they wrote in their post.

"Amazing work guys," mocked another, with a meme showing that the Biden administration favors 'anti-racist bridges' over 'safe bridges.'

"It was a racist bridge. Makes sense now," jibed a third.

"If your heart went out to them; you would resign. This is your job," slammed a fourth.

"If you were not focused on calling bridges 'racist' instead of doing the job you are woefully unqualified for, perhaps this tragedy could have been prevented!" exclaimed a fifth.
