WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Nancy Pelosi's assertion that populism is 'a threat to democracy' was brutally refuted by former Mumford & Sons banjoist Winston Marshall, who said that the real threat to democracy was an elite governing class that looked down on rather than worked for the people, according to The Dailywire.

Notably, during her speech at Oxford Union in late April, Pelosi said that 'populism' was the same as 'ethno-nationalism' and 'isolationism' and that those labeled as 'populists' exploited the populace after they attained positions of authority.

She continued by saying that certain Americans, who she described as 'poor souls who are looking for some answers', were unable to accept the Democratic Party's solutions because they believed that 'guns, gays, [and] God' were more important than reality.

After she was done speaking, Marshall gave his analysis of the matter. He started by outlining how Democrats had gradually distorted the definition of 'populism', turning it from a positive term when it was used to describe former President Barack Obama to a negative one when it was used to describe Donald Trump.

According to Marshall, Obama had publicly opposed Trump being referred to be a populist as recently as 2016, saying that he had little regard for working people and was trying to take credit for being a 'populist'.

Marshall said, "If anything, Obama argued that he was the populist. If anything, Obama argued that Bernie was a populist. Something curious happens. If you watch Obama’s speeches after that point, more and more recently, he uses the word ‘populist’ interchangeably with ‘strong man,’ ‘authoritarian.’ The word changes meaning. It becomes a negative, a pejorative, a slur."

Moreover, noting that Pelosi had even called it 'a threat to democracy,' he added, "'Populism' has become a word used synonymously with 'racist'. We’ve heard 'ethno-nationalist', we have 'bigot', we have 'hillbilly', 'redneck', we have 'deplorable'. Elites use it to show their contempt for ordinary people."

After stating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, a 'dark day' in American history, Marshall went on to argue that other days in the country's history also merited consideration.

He said, "I’m sure Congresswoman Pelosi will agree that the entire month of June 2020, when the federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon, was under siege and under insurrection by radical progressives, those, too, were dark days for America."
