EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY: President Donald Trump briefly stole the spotlight during Spain's FIFA World Cup trophy celebrations on Sunday, July 19, after remaining on the podium as the newly crowned champions prepared to lift the trophy following their 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.

Trump, who attended the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino and several world leaders, presented medals to players from both teams before handing the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri. An awkward moment unfolded when the president stayed on stage with the Spanish players instead of stepping aside, prompting FIFA officials to signal him to move so the team could celebrate.

Trump remains on podium during Spain's World Cup trophy celebration

Following Spain's victory over defending champions Argentina, Trump and Infantino presented medals to match officials, Argentina's runners-up squad and Spain's World Cup-winning players.

Trump greeted players with handshakes as he placed medals around their necks before helping present the trophy to captain Rodri.

As Spain gathered for the traditional trophy lift, Trump remained on the podium among the celebrating players, pumping his fists and applauding the champions. Videos showed him standing beside the team as they prepared to lift football's biggest prize.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials then gestured for Trump to step aside, allowing Rodri and his teammates to celebrate without obstruction. The brief exchange quickly went viral on social media, with clips of the incident drawing widespread attention.

Earlier in the ceremony, Trump was also met with loud boos from sections of the crowd when he walked onto the field alongside Infantino for the post-match presentation. The reaction subsided as the medal ceremony got underway.

Spain defeats Argentina to win second FIFA World Cup title

Spain claimed its second FIFA World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal, while Argentina finished the match with 10 men after Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time of normal time, ending Lionel Messi's hopes of defending the title.

The podium incident drew comparisons with the FIFA Club World Cup final earlier this year, when Trump also remained on stage during Chelsea's trophy celebrations. This time, however, FIFA officials ensured the US president stepped away before Spain completed its iconic World Cup trophy lift.

Despite the historic victory, much of the post-match discussion centered on the trophy ceremony, where Trump's brief appearance during Spain's celebrations and the crowd's mixed reaction became one of the night's most talked-about moments.
