Trump recalls friendship and mutual respect with John F Kennedy Jr
Speaking on Thursday, March 26, during an interview on The Five, Trump spoke warmly about the late Kennedy, describing both a personal and professional connection.
“I think he would have gone on, perhaps, to be the president,” Trump said when asked about Kennedy Jr.’s future.
His comments come at a time when public interest in Kennedy Jr. and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy has picked up again, following the release of a fictional series about their relationship.
Trump said his connection with Kennedy Jr. went beyond casual acquaintance. According to him, the two shared a mutual liking and stayed in touch during the height of Kennedy Jr.’s media career.
“I actually knew him and liked him, and he liked me, believe it or not,” Trump said.
He also pointed to Kennedy Jr.’s work with George magazine, noting that he once appeared on its cover. The magazine, founded by Kennedy Jr., was a prominent project during that time.
Trump added that Kennedy Jr. had bigger ambitions beyond publishing. “He was going to run for the Senate. He told me, and nobody would have beaten him,” Trump said, suggesting he saw strong political potential in him.
Plans for politics and a future cut short
According to Trump, Kennedy Jr. had already started thinking about a shift into politics before his death. He said the plan was to step away from the magazine world and pursue a political career.
Trump described him as someone who could have succeeded easily in that space. His comments paint a picture of Kennedy Jr. as a rising political figure whose trajectory was interrupted too soon.
The president’s remarks reflect a long-standing fascination with what Kennedy Jr. might have achieved had he lived.

Memories of JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s relationship
Trump also shared personal anecdotes about Kennedy Jr.’s marriage to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, recalling moments when the couple stayed at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
“They would go down to Mar-a-Lago together, and they had a very interesting relationship,” Trump said.
He described their dynamic in simple terms. “They would bicker together, in other words have little fights, and then they would make up and start kissing wildly.”
“It was one of those relationships, and you never know how those relationships are going to turn out,” he added.
The couple’s relationship has recently returned to public discussion due to renewed media attention, bringing back memories of their time in the spotlight.
Kennedy Jr. and Bessette Kennedy died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in 1999, a moment that shocked the nation and ended what many saw as a promising future.
