SWANNANOA, NORTH CAROLINA: GOP nominee Donald Trump claimed he did not need to survey the devastation wreaked upon the state of North Carolina by Hurricane Helene as part of his campaign and could have instead spent his time on a soothing beach, reported the People.

North Carolina was one of the states that were ravaged by the storm last month, and Trump was standing in one of the hardest-hit areas while he made the remark.

According to the publication, the former president created traffic jams and closed highways as he made his way through certain areas of the state on Monday, October 21. To avoid these very issues, incumbent president Joe Biden did an aerial tour of the region on September 30.

Donald Trump says he's been campaigning continuously without a day off

During a news conference in Swannanoa, Donald Trump insisted that he had not taken a day off from campaigning in a while, and could have been on a beach instead of where he was, had he so wished.

"I've gone 52 days without a day off... I didn't have to be here. I could be on a beautiful beach,” he stated.

However, he added, "I’d much rather be right here with you because we’re going to turn the country around. I have no days off, so I’ll be going into the 60s or 70s in terms of no days off. I don’t want a day off. We have to win. We have to win, we have to save our country. We have to just make America great again. That’s the message.”

The press conference also had Trump promoting baseless allegations against FEMA workers in the state, as well as being awarded a pin for his performance of manning the french fry station at a McDonald's outlet in Pennsylvania the previous day.

Internet slams Donald Trump for saying he didn't have to survey hurricane damage

Social media users slammed Donald Trump for insensitively stating that he could have spent his time on the beach while the people in Arizona and neighboring south-eastern states are trying to recover from the devastation wreaked upon them.

"He needs to go away for good!" a person commented on the news on Facebook.

"He's truly despicable man!" stated another.

"Yeah he did it for votes, not because he actually cares," jibed a third.

"Does this person EVER talk about anyone but himself?!" exclaimed a fourth.

"Sick narcissistic man," shared a user on X.

"It's all about him. Shows no compassion. Egoistical behaviour. Besides: it's his choice to run for President," noted yet another.

"If Trump is so put off by having to 'work' he should just retire," quipped another user.
