WASHINGTON, DC: Just one day after reports surfaced that the Democratic Party may hold a rare national convention before the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump announced the Republican Party could do the same. He told his supporters to “stay tuned” for updates.

The move would mark a first in modern political history and comes as both parties face struggles in national polling ahead of the midterms.

Trump floats idea of Republican National Convention before midterms

Donald Trump praised the GOP’s momentum and pointed to what he described as strong support across the country.

“The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” the 79-year-old wrote on Truth Social.

Highlighting GOP fundraising strength and policies he said reversed former President Joe Biden’s agenda, Trump added, “In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”

Democrats also weigh early convention plans for 2026

According to Axios, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin has floated the idea of a national convention ahead of the midterms to boost energy among Democratic voters.

The reports arrive as Democrats grapple with a steep decline in favorability, which dropped to near a three-decade low this month. Party officials see an early convention as a way to revive enthusiasm among their base.

“Americans everywhere are fired up and ready to fight back against Trump’s reckless policies — including his budget betrayal that cuts health care and food assistance for millions of people,” a DNC spokesperson said in a statement. They added that the committee is exploring “several options … including hosting a large-scale gathering before the midterms.”

While Democrats’ support has slipped, Trump and the GOP have also faced hurdles.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Trump signed into law on Independence Day, received only 32% approval among. The MAGA leader's favorability stood at 38% as of August 14, as per a Pew study

“Epic!!! Wouldn’t that be cool?!!! Do it!!!” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another shared, “Great idea. An incentive to get mid-term voters out. We could certainly use it.”

A person said, “Trump planning a midterm-style National Convention would be a game changer – GOP base will be fired up like it’s a presidential year,” while someone else mentioned, Wonderful idea but some classic Trump rallies would also certainly go a long way as well."

Some also pointed out that Democrats were exploring a similar strategy, with one saying, "The dems have been floating the same idea the last couple days.”
