WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Troy Nehls, a Republican from Texas, was the subject of an investigation by the House Ethics Committee on Friday, May 10, for allegedly misusing $25,000 in campaign funds for personal use both before and during his first time in Congress, as per the New York Post.

Notably, the inquiry against Nehls, which started on March 26, has been prolonged, according to ranking member Susan Wild and ethics chairman Michael Guest. However, neither member has provided an update to the public regarding its status.

Guest and Wild said in a statement, "The Committee notes that the mere fact of conducting further review of a referral, and any mandatory disclosure of such further review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee."

The panel also made available a December report from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) outlining the accusations. The 14-page report states that Nehls, three of his congressional workers, and two of his campaign aides declined to assist with the OCE probe.

Moreover, Nehls said in a statement, "The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) was created under Nancy Pelosi, which is why I refused to cooperate with the office. My books remain open, and I am cooperating with the legitimate House Committee on Ethics."

Nehls, a staunch Donald Trump ally, caused a stir in October 2023 during the House speakership battle by proposing the former president to head the Republican conference.

Notably, Nehls donned a striking red, white, and blue bowtie along with a white T-shirt that had President Trump's mugshot and the words 'Never Surrender' during President Biden's State of the Union speech in March.

The specified location of 'Freedom Hall' in the Houston suburb of Richmond, Texas, was never paid for by the congressman's campaign committee; the land is now an 'Islamic center and boarding school', according to the report.

Rather, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts documents show that Nehls for Congress paid Liberty 1776, LLC, of whom the Republican is the sole proprietor, $25,319 in rent between 2019 and 2022.

Internet trolls Troy Nehls

Many people on the internet trolled Troy Nehls as the House Ethics Committee claimed he misused $25,000 in campaign funds for personal use both before and during his first time in Congress.

A user posted on X, "Oh look, more MAGA corruption," while one added, "So, basically what Trump does by making money from Secret Service etc, at Mar-a-Lago and other properties. Our tax dollars pay for his security as they follow him from club to court to club, eating his hamburgers and staying in his luxury rooms."

A person also wrote, "The man with no moral compass finally gets caught. Good," whereas one mentioned, "Crooked cop still crooked. Shocker."

A user stated, "Typical conservative Texas politician! The majority of them are crooks," while one wrote, "His being a Republican goes without saying."
